Well I figured since we have a disappointed the most PS4 thread we could have a surprised thread. Basically a game that maybe cause of the reviews, or maybe launch problems or just a game you thought was going to be bad but in the end you were surprised by it and really enjoyed it.

Mine would have to be Mortal Kombat X. After playing all the other MK games after MK3 I was left disappointed by them. The last one I kinda enjoyed was MK VS DC but that wasn't a true MK game in my eyes. I never played MK 9 so I didn't know what to expect. Well on a whim I decided to rent MK X and wow I was blown away, Now this was Mortal Kombat!!! It quickly became one of my GOTY candidates.

I liked Watch_Dogs. I thought Aiden Pearce was absolutely fine. Yes, hacking was a letdown and the Ubisoft template was tiresome, but overall I really enjoyed my time in Chicago. Don't regret it one bit.

no games have really surprised me this year to be honest, every game i played was pretty much what i expected

although some of the game announcements this year have

"I pity you. You just don't get it at all...there's not a thing I don't cherish!"

"Now! This is it! Now is the time to choose! Die and be free of pain or live and fight your sorrow! Now is the time to shape your stories! Your fate is in your hands!

Rocket League. I was fully expecting it to be another PS+ game I only played once and never touched again. I'm not as high up on it as some but it's a really good game.

I'll back @Splat on that one. Rocket League seemed to come out of nowhere and was a very welcome title!

There was a game idea here. It's gone now.

Valiant Hearts, Elder Scrolls Online, The Wolf Amongst Us...wasn't expecting much from any of them and love them all!

@mrobinson91: I'd second Valiant Hearts but that was last year for me.

I'd have to say Axiom Verge. Could have just ended up being another throw away title, but I really enjoyed it.

@Splat: Yeah Rocket League would have surprised me too, only thing I watched some beta videos and was following it quite a bit so when I got it I had an idea that it was good.

The intros from Tales from the Borderland and The amount of weapons in mgspp.

Personally I have always disliked online gaming. Destiny raids, Rocket League and Fifa 16 pro with everyone from the community has converted me (slightly) and that really is a surprise.

Good Lord yes! The cocky/confident swagger and music of the intro pieces are amazing. I wasn't sure what to expect from the game, but in terms of setting the style, these were superb.

Edit - must mention the last battle too, the nods and winks there made me (actually) laugh. Superb game!

Not having my PS4 for that long - Since February, most of the games I really enjoyed I have bought on XB1 first. The others in some ways disappointed a bit - Killzone, Infamous... If I count the Gen 8 games that are also available on PS4, the biggest surprise game so far is The Witcher 3.

I really enjoyed the Witcher 2 but the Witcher 3 is on a whole new level. Its not often that a game I am really looking forward to lives up to the expectation and anticipation but this exceeded those. Even though the game is more open world than its predecessor, he depth of Story is superb, the characters are excellent and the game play is fantastic too. Combat can be a real challenge - especially on the higher difficulty settings. The visuals are incredible - whether in a busy town, forest or snowy land - the attention to detail is amazing. All the buildings look unique and there isn't a feeling of cut and paste about any of it. The night/day cycle creates some of the best looking vistas ever with the rising/setting sun creating some incredible skys and lighting too. The feeling the world carries on doing whatever it was doing, whether you are there or not helps bring it alive and creates a feeling of a living, breathing world.
I can't say I was overly impressed with the 'free' DLC. Most of it felt 'cut' from the disc for that purpose and a bit of PR too. When it was given, some of it was useless to me at my level at the time too - particularly the armour and weapons. Also felt it was handled a bit wrong in game too - it was difficult to find exactly where to access some of these. This though was a very minor point and really didn't affect my enjoyment.
Its easily the best 'Game of the Year' and best game this generation.

Why can't life be like gaming? Why can't I restart from an earlier checkpoint??

Rocket League thought the idea sounded silly then played it and got hooked. Glad they gave it away as a PS Plus games because I would not have got chance to play it otherwise.

Even though have not played it probably Until Dawn would have been a game I thought would be bad and bomb which has actually done really well and is a good game.

Well I finally finished Tales of Borderlands...and that has exceeded all expectations! What an incredible game! The sound track, the voice acting, the writing, the art style is all perfect (plus Gortys, the lovable robot is voiced by Ashley Johnson who also voices Ellie)!!! As already mentioned, the music in the "intro sequences just feel so epic! Can't praise this game enough.

I gotta say NEVER ALONE...for some strange reason, I really got into it to complete it fully. Also, UNTIL DAWN...wow, even though I thought the graphics could have been a little better, it is just a horror-fan's dream (In my opinion).
