Hi guys

I'm considering a pur chase of PS4 Pro and VR etc.
However, I haven't has a PS since PS1 therefore I'm way behind the times.

My query is, I have a very slow Internet connection where I live (and can't be upgraded), will this affect my use of the console?

Thanks in advance.

With day one patches on most games, some of which weigh in at up to 20GB, I would say a slow connection could be a deal breaker. If you're happy with picking up game of the year editions though (and therefore waiting a year or more after initial release to get a game and not every game will get this treatment) you should be OK as they are usually patched up and contain everything on the disc. It is still worth checking however as this is not always the case (Dragon Age Inquisition springs to mind where it is just the day one disc with a code in the box for the DLC).

Hmm, not good.
Thanks mate, game of year editions is a good tip.

@SkandiFlick: Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but figured it was better to know than not. If you're getting one though you can probably find information online as to patch sizes and which games function OK without them (in most cases games go gold at the earliest possibility with the aim to patch a multitude of bugs day one, but even with those patches games are often still unstable so I doubt they'd be too good without them - additionally some games are actually incomplete on the disc requiring the patch to add in the missing code).

Given that the PS4 has been out for 3 years now though there should be a fair few GotY editions to pick up already, so it might still be a viable purchase (I also don't know if VR games have been releasing in a complete form not needing patching, might be worth looking that up too).

It's VR that I really want to use.
So if I borrow a friends fast Internet, get my games patched up, I'll be good to go once back home? (If not competing online etc).

Agreed with all sentiments, patches will prove the killer. Also, almost all PSVR games are digital only - and those that aren't all have patches. In terms of internet speed, you can leave the PS4 on standby to download patches etc. so it will just take ages unless you have a cap and/or consistent drop outs.

However, as you said, if you can get online at a friends, I would install games there and get the patches and then take it back home when done! Hope it works - I love my VR!

Now I may be an idiot, but there's one thing I am not sir, and that sir, is an idiot

@SkandiFlick All the internet I have is a 3GB/month plan from my phone, good enough for firmware updates and small patches. Most of my games are Goty editions with all content on disc, but when I have to download something big I usually move my console to a friend's house or to the indie shop where I buy games and download all is in my queue in few hours.
If your connection is slow, but unlimited, then it's just a matter of patience.

You should be ok as long as you're not planning to play online multiplayer. My internet connection is so bad I can't even get through a YouTube video without it buffering. Because of this, playing online is just not possible for me but I haven't had any problems playing solo. The game patches haven't been an issue since I usually just start the downloads and put the PS4 in rest mode at night before I go to bed so the games are ready to go whenever I get around to actually playing them. I also haven't had problems using PSVR until I tried streaming a Muse music video. It was odd having the vr music video freeze all around me while it just kept buffering. Other than that, using PSVR for solo games should be ok.

@SkandiFlick: I also have a horrible internet connection, it took me almost 2 days to download Diablo 3. My advice is to keep the automatic download/update option enabled and always put the PS4 in rest mode rather than turning it off, you'd be surprised at how much quicker the patch/game will be downloaded. I also believe the rest mode is better for the PS4 than shutting it completely down if its in regular use.
When you're actually gaming go to your download list and pause everything before turning off the internet connection in the settings which in my experience makes the PS4 more responsive.

Not all games launch broken, a good internet connection is not essential to have a good PlayStation experience. A lot of the VR games are digital only, but they are 'smaller games'- Rigs is the biggest at ~20GB and 2 of PSVRs best games Thumper and Rez Infinite are 1.3GB & 2.1GB respectively. Hope you enjoy your PS4 Pro & the PSVR.
