Topic: Deus Ex HDR update impact

Hi everybody,

I am surprised nobody has yet talked about the HDR update.
Since I got an HDR TV, I tried it out immediately and I love the results so far. It definitely adds to the atmosphere. The colors are great (the yellows look much more intense in the game now).

The problem is now just, how do I show it to you? The screenshot function on the PS4 does not really help, both HDR and non-HDR look the same on the screenshot. I also tried using my phone camera, but it also looks wrong and not how my eyes see it.

I hope Push Square is able to do a test soon, but from my point of view, I already like the HDR update and will definitely play Deus Ex in HDR.

I will still maybe somehow try to do photos or something later.

Is there anybody else with an HDR TV and Deus Ex, who tried it out?

4 colour to 16 colour was a huge leap. 256 colour was another giant leap in quality. The way I understand hdr it is basically another step all no that scale - more colours. There is every reason to expect a lot from it

10bit colour, as HDR is, has over 1bn possible colours (1024x1024x1024). Colour is made up of specific values of Red, Green and Blue but there is also another aspect - brightness. Colour range is usually shown as a 'triangle' and HDR's triangle of colour (wider colour gamut) is larger than SDR. All the colour values though can have a 'light' value of 0 to 100nits (in SDR) or over 1000nits (in HDR) meaning the 'volume' of colour (think of a Toblerone where the triangular shape represents the colour range and the length represents the contrast ratio - 0-100 SDR or 0-1,000nits for HDR) is vastly higher in HDR. A slight increase in the triangles area can make a big difference in its 'volume' but HDR also has a big increase in the brightness

At present, HDR10 certified TV's, even calibrated, meet the minimum specs but every (commercial) TV cannot meet the optimum specs and would have a different colour volume. NO TV can meet the full rec2020 colour gamut - so their 'triangle' varies slightly in size but none yet as 'big' as it could be. Contrast ratio also varies too with some TV's reaching over 1500nits. As a result, colour volume can be drastically different and as HDR is scaled to the TV it would differ.

At present, even if you were able to accurately capture and share that HDR image, unless someone else shares exactly the same colour volume, there is no way they could see the image as you would.

A pessimist is just an optimist with experience!

Why can't life be like gaming? Why can't I restart from an earlier checkpoint??

Feel free to add me but please send a message so I know where you know me from...
