So a few days ago when Sony announced the closing of PS Store on PS3 and after seeing reports that some games can't download updates I decided to fire up my PS3 and make sure my games are up to date and I have all the DLC's installed, since I have not used my PS3 in a few years. My model is Fat 80Gb PAL CECHL08. I updated system software, everything was going fine until I put MotorStrom PR disc. The disc was recognized, but after I started the game it crashed immediately with error 80010514. So I tried the next few games and they worked flawlessly. Until Resident Evil 5 and Heavy Rain got the same error. The discs themselves are clean without any scratches. I tested about 30 game discs and only those 3 discs won't launch (except Heavy Rain, more info at the end). I've also tried to run some Digital PS3 games on my hard drive - no issues.

I tried to run those discs each time after I did the following actions:

  • deleting game install and update data
  • reinstalling game and update data
  • deleting save data
  • restoring file system
  • rebuilding database
  • restoring default settings
  • restoring PS3 system completely
  • reinstalling system update
  • using lens cleaning disc a few times

Nothing helped.

Except the Heavy Rain disc did start without the error after I installed the bonus DLC chapter Taxidermist only (no install data or patches of Heavy Rain were on HDD prior to that)! And it was before I did all of the above. After installing game data and patches it also now works perfectly.

I've come to a conclusion that it might be Firmware related. But I'm not ruling out a possibility of dying BluRay Drive or HDD.

So before I crack open my PS3 I wanted to ask someone to test if their discs of either RE5 or MSPR or Heavy Rain still working with system update 4.87. Preferably original release disc versions in EU/UK region.

Can't answer your other questions, but I installed my Resident Evil 5 Gold Edition disc (with all the DLC on it etc) literally about 2 days ago and it loaded perfectly with no errors or issues so far. I'm using a 500MB Slim PS3 though, so it could be your older model playing up perhaps ?
