Topic: Samsung Q80T Vertical Line/Shimmer

Hi All. Off the back of the recent TV article on Pushsquare, I invested in a new Samsung tele. When playing PS5 I occasionally notice numerous vertical shimmers and/or grainy grey lines. These only occur when scrolling or rotating the camera. If I hold still, these effects disappear and I get a normal image. This also occurs to a lesser effect on my Switch when moving across town on animal crossing. Certainly more noticeable when the background is a skybox or similar.

I haven't noticed this when using the television to view netflix or youtube - so suspect this is linked directly to gaming. So, my question is twofold. Are there other owners of this set that have noticed something similar? Is there anyone out there with more knowledge than me who can suggest tv settings that could prevent this?

It really isn't a big issue, but an issue nevertheless which has put a bit of a downer on the £1,350 spent on this new set up. Any help or suggestions (virtual shoulder to cry on/smallest violin) would be appreciated. Thanks

@Shellcore sorry to hear that. I'm no expert, but have you tried different modes? Does it only happen on Game mode? or Cinema mode etc? As it could be related to the mode. Either way, if it feels like a defect it might well be. Doesn't sound normal anyway. If you're not happy I would get a refund (if you only just bought it then that should be OK I think). Maybe get a different screen? I would recommend the LG OLED CX range as the best quality.

Hi Shellcore. A couple of suggestions from memory so might be slightly off, but I've had a few Samsungs over the years including last year's QLED and this sort of thing is usually down to over-enthusiastic "Auto Motion Plus" settings.

Firstly, make sure that you have "Game Mode" switched on for your PS5. Menu > System > General > Game Mode.

Also, under the Game Mode settings you'll have the ability to customise the level of Auto Motion Plus (just like in the picture settings, but for Game Mode it is here). A lot of this is down to taste, but I like to have it on to a moderate level, other people hate it because it makes things look a bit too smooth and soap-opera-like. Either way, having Judder reduction and Blur Reduction turned up too high will make the TV try to guess movement and interpolate frames to "smooth" out the motion which can result in tearing, which sounds like what you're experiencing. Set them to 0 then increase them slowly until you have a nice smooth motion when panning that you like, but stop increasing it before it starts to result in that tearing.

I hope this makes sense and that all the settings are still where I remember them to be! Enjoy the new TV and console - both are superb when set up properly!

@Shellcore check the settings sooner rather than later because if you need a refund because you're not happy with the tv, unless faulty it needs to be returned within either 7 or 14 days (not sure which but I thought it was 14). Some retailers are more willing to abide by the consumer laws than others but if you have any trouble then check out which.co.uk for advice! Hopefully the settings fix your issue though!

See ya!

I bought a Q80T as well last month, but haven’t experienced this problem at all. I used the recommended settings from rtings.com for that TV. ( https://www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/samsung/q80t-qled/settings )

You should in particular make sure that:

  • You are using a good high speed HDMI cable
  • It is plugged into HDMI4 port on the back (marked with a game controller)
  • you have game mode on

Thank you all. Messed with the settings and the issue, whilst not completely solved, is barely noticable. Astrobot Playroom is the main culprit. Bugsnax appears pretty much flawless. Again, big thanks for offering advice.
