Hey Peeps,

I need some friendly advice, possible support since Sony is hard to reach with this COIVD stuff. I had an issue with my PS4 and looking for some input.

Two nights ago I was playing AC Origins when the game suddenly kept loading and freezing. Eventually I had to shut down my entire console. The next day, I went to power it on and I couldn’t make it past the PS4 logo screen. It would just be dark and then the console would restart.

Eventually, I put it in safe mode, rebuilt the database and boom. We made it. So I thought.

I tried loading up several games; Spider-Man I got past the developer credits, no start screen. Origins didn’t even make it to the developer credits. Uncharted collection (downloaded on the console/no disc) able to get to the start screen.

Eventually I ended up powering off the console, taking it apart and cleaning any dust (not much) and then initializing it/full factory reset. Seems to be working now.

I’m genuinely curious what could’ve been the issue. I recently upgraded the 500GB hard drive to a Seagate Firecuda 2TB one in January and it’s been working fine.

I know the PS4 didn’t overheat because it didn’t shut down, I also have it in a stand fan as well. It’s not a disc error because it’s reading discs.

Any ideas? I’m thinking it’s a hard drive issue and I’m contemplating contacting Seagate support for a replacement or something. Could it have been the stand fan? It was on but could the PS4 and hard drive still have gotten too hot?

Some background; I got my PS4 in November on Black Friday, it was used. Console is not jail broken, no games are on it other than licensed ones. Haven’t had any issues since I got the console in November. I will admit, it was prematurely unplugged once or twice in the past when I thought the console was finished powering down but wasn’t. Not a lot, but it has happened.

Any help would be appreciated!

Do you still have your old HDD lying around? If so, try switch back to the 500Gb drive and format it and try a game. If it works your new HDD might been damaged or just corrupted data so you need to re-format the new one.
Sounds like a HDD problem in any case.

@Zeke68 thanks for the advice! I had a feeling it was. I just played a few hours of Origins. No issues, no pauses. Seems the restore fixed the issue for now. I do have the original drive so if this happens again I’ll likely connect that and just use an external for storage.

Great to hear it seem to work again. Just an advice, never EVER disconnect your PS4 (or computer or whatever) before it 100% has shut down. Most consoles and computers closes open files until last second while booting down making it very likely that you end up with corrupted data on your storage devices !
So I guess that is what happended here. If you're really unlucky you can corrupt the HDD so bad that you can't even format your HDD again, it's unlikely but that happended to me once and I had to send it back to the manufacturer so they could reformat it for me. So be cautious about disconnecting it while the HDD is still working.

@Zeke68 haha preaching to the choir mate. I was in a rush and forgot it takes a second or two for it to shut off. Definitely gonna be more mindful going forward to avoid this happening again. Luckily, before I reformatted i was able to backup my saves and such so I’m counting my blessings haha

@Stryder1017 You really don't need to unplug the ps4, unless you plan on cleaning it or to move it. It is fine just to turn if off using the power options on the console and leave it plugged in.

Life is more fun when you help people succeed, instead of wishing them to fail.

Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and remove all doubt.
