This is a bit of a weird situation that I don't understand myself so I'll walk through what normally happens. I only keep ps4 games installed on an external hard drive to play on my ps5.
This only happens to two games in particular Destiny 2 and Elder scrolls online. These games will frequently show a grayed out "Installed" instead of the typical play game option on the main menu. If I try and launch either one I will get stuck in a never ending transition screen that I am able to back out of with the psn button.
The only work around I have discovered is to use the "safely remove from ps5" option on my external hard drive in the storage menu and then attempting to relaunch the game. After a series of what sounds like rapid menu select noises I'm greeted with a message informing me this game is already installed on an external hard drive and I must connect it to play. Simply restarting my ps5 at this point will allow me to launch and play either game without a problem. This occurs about every week and has for several months now. However as of today it has stopped working. I have no idea what is even happening any ideas would be appreciated.
A few things of note: Both are physical copies, I have several other physical and digital games on the hard drive that never have an issue just these two, I have attempted fresh installs on both games it makes no difference, both games fix and break at the same time never independently, and I do not use the ps5 rest mode feature as that has caused issues with my external hard drive in the past.
@bluerhino123 Both the games you mention have PS5 version Destiny 2 is free to play so you can just go and download for PS5 version. Elder scrolls online is a free PS5 upgrade so put your disk in and you’ll be able to download for PS5 version for free although you will always need your disk to run the PS5 version. Unfortunately these games will need to be installed on your PS fives internal storage.
