It happens when I'm playing any game, and I had it in an old TV cabinet standing vertically, was wondering if having it vertical could be affecting it, so I have bought a new cabinet (the old one was falling to bits) that will allow me to store it horizontally but it will still be in a cabinet even if it is open, could that be the problem that it is not getting enough airflow if so I don't know what else I can do as I simply haven't got the space to store it next to my TV. The space I will be putting it is on a soundbar shelf in the new cabinet it is mostly open but is still covered and is probably less space than the original cabinet had.
@Miserydhala I think airflow is the key. I believe Sony recommends that the console be placed at least 4-6 inches from any wall or obstruction on all sides, so having it in a cabinet is okay but it shouldn’t be snugly fit inside it. Especially it should have ample space at the back behind it, where the hot air is expelled from the system. So hopefully the cabinet is deep enough or has an open back or plenty of vent holes.
That said, for the first couple years of my original base PS5’s life, I stored it in a cabinet that it just barely fit inside, with probably only an inch of two clearance on the sides. I remember thinking how nice it looked placed tightly in that space that seemed tailor-made for it. I used it there for a long time, even having many long gaming sessions. I never once had any overheating issues that I know of (certainly I never got a warning message from the console or a shutdown) and the console still works completely normally. I eventually replaced the cabinet and my new one has a much larger shelf space where I have the console (now a Pro) free from any side panels by at least 4 inches all the way around.
When you say it runs hot, are you getting a popup message while playing which says you are overheating or have you have it shut itself down? Because I think if you reach back and feel the back of the unit during use, it’s pretty normal for it to be warm.
“We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.”
@JohnnyShoulder That's a BAD IDEA! His console isn't to that point yet where its shutting-down from overheating "probably a long ways away since his console is relatively new" so using that method now would destroy his console 50x faster lol.
