@Th3solution honestly, I could be wrong in what I've said. It's just knowledge from bare minimum research a long time ago so I may have misremembered. I was talking about data writing to hard disks (the spinning platter type, not the newer SSD type) in general not about that specific scenario anyway.

I was under the impression and again I'm not positive, that DLC, patches and other updates get installed in the same location as the base file on PS4. No matter what your storage preferences are. Maybe the data was going to the external because that's how it was set but it would have ultimately ended up being installed on the internal? I can't say really lol.

I wouldn't put a huge amount of thought into it unless you wanted to do something really specific. At the end of the day, they are all consumer devices designed to be used by technologically illiterate people, which is kind of why the approaches from different companies can wind me up sometimes. Occasionally they can be too technical in the case of certain consoles (Nintendo data transfers come to mind) or getting deep into systems can be blocked or made obtuse (apple devices come to mind). Really a consumer technology product should always have a base level of functionality that can be experienced by all users but have a transparent and easy to access option to dive deeper if that's what is required (Windows comes to mind despite its faults). That's just my opinion anyway.

Sorry I digressed! My point was that the PS4 and a lot of other devices are made in such a way that you should be able to just plug it in and play. Worrying about how the internals works is really for enthusiasts (including those who become enthusiastic from using the product) and those who have problems and need to seek support. Even for the latter, I have very little patience for companies that expect you to understand anything about their product apart from the end user functionality. If I ever speak to support for anything, I either play completely dumb or with a very small amount of knowledge just to get past the obvious questions. It's only because if you think you know something or get distracted by it or hung up on it then it could be something that's completely irrelevant. So best to stick to the topic at hand! Having said that, unless something is in warranty or under the UKs fairly generous consumer protection laws (in which case I'd expect the manufacturer or store respectively to solve my issue with limited input from myself), I wouldn't go to an official support channel for help from an intern reading a script and palming me off because it's beyond their knowledge. I'd go on an internet search or YouTube to find out from people with hands on experience and copy what they are doing exactly to fix my issue. Sorry I ended up on a rant about companies again there, my apologies ๐Ÿ˜…

Edit: and another thing I forgot to have a rant about (sorry I can't help myself ๐Ÿ˜…). Having worked in/with technology, it's my experience that end user companies of various tech usually (not always) wait for stuff to go wrong before fixing it. They only ever have the foresight to do a pre emptive plan when either a new hot shot manager has just come into their position and wants to make a good impression or if it's coming up to April (end of the UK tax year) and they have remaining budget to blow on doing something that might actually be useful. Departments tend to have their budget slashed if they don't use it all so they will use it on anything just so they can keep the same or increase their budget for next year.

@ralphdibny Haha, no itโ€™s well put. I agree.
I like console gaming because of its low barrier to entry. Iโ€™ve not gotten into PC gaming because Iโ€™m intimidated by the technical side of it. But I do like having a little bit of control over the systems. In general I think Sony does a good job of walking that thin line of accessibility yet with options for expanded usage.

@Th3solution I agree, except that "Other" folder which can be infuriatingly vague lol. Same here with the PC thing too. I'm sure it's easy once you've learned it but stuff like having a PSU with the correct power output, motherboard compatibility with processors and graphics cards combined with the financial cost of making a mistake really blows my mind and puts me off endeavouring into it too! Experience is the best way to learn things, it's just too pricey for me and my limited income to actually experience it.

I do have a fairly powerful, albeit somewhat old, Mac Pro though that I've recently found out you can install windows on with an Apple made program called bootcamp. I'm going to try that soon and maybe I can access some of this elusive PC gaming that people speak of!

Been some time since I have been on, more wanted to say hi and touch base that all are doing well. I actually got my other file down to 42GB on my Primary System Storage, my two 8TB Extended storage drives still hold at 22GB Other storage.

Recently it jumped to 152GB, I have run through all games on both drives, and games on system drives (takes time as I have over 400 games) But I think I may have come upon a possible source. I have (5) pending pre-orders, (3) have indicated they tried to download and failed, appeared to have done this a few times (1) was the Mass Effect Legendary Edition, and couple others, it showed them in downloads on my PC, but not the Play Station itself. They tried to download way before their allowed date which was odd. So I think it could be date for these, now sitting in limbo till I can actually download and install the games. I will know in another day or two as Mass Effect will be able to be downloaded and installed.

@Sac_Ratchet_002 heya, nice one! Did you work out if it was the COD warzone update that was taking up that big chunk of data before?

Anyway, good to hear some follow up news on the issue!

See ya!

Yeah I worked it out, At least for a while. Thing I hate about the COD games I have, and lol I have them all, is the placement of the DLC and such. It is random, hell I look at the DLC in COD Warzone and that folder pops up with DLC for other COD Games. PS4 system filing is a mess.

What I find I have to do is basically go into games one by one in the library and have it check for updates on each extended storage drive, then after I run through them, I let it sit overnight and bam, there will be like 5 or more updates done and then the "Other" file goes down on the system drive, it always remains constant on the extended storage drives at 22GB, but the system drive floats between 25GB at it's smallest to 175GB at its largest, So I believe it is data for pending pre-order downloads or something like that.

Right now I have pending:

Back For Blood
Kena Bridge of Sprits
HiredGun
BioMutant
Rust Console Edition (Was in Failed Downloads)
Mass Effect Legendary Edition ( Was in failed downloads)

Recently installed:
Secret Neighbor (it had a failed download prior to the actual download release date)
WatchDogs Legion (it had a failed download prior to the actual download release date)
Ride 4

Wish I could just have access to see what was in that folder, But I think it is just trapped download data, that eventually falls into place.

I have decided no more pre-orders or anything till all these are able to download and see what happens then.

@Sac_Ratchet_002 I wonder if that's to do with the more recent cod games like MW and black ops cold war sharing data with warzone or something. It's lucky I'm not really into the series in terms of the multiplayer. I've played the campaigns on the 4 CoDs that came to PS Plus though. MW1+2 remastered, black ops 3 and ww2.

But yeah, I reckon Sony weren't expecting too many "power users" so to speak. It was only a few years ago that they enabled storing games on external drives. Even when upgrading the internal you would be limited to 2tb as the drive gets too thick to fit in the bay if you go any bigger. That's unless you get an adapter of course!

I think I manage to fit all the games I own on a 2tb internal and a 2tb external with some left over space for ps plus games. I do have a 1tb Xbox one with a 2tb external, switch with 128gb SD card, Wii U with a 500gb external and a 1tb PS3 though so I guess my games can be spread out across more consoles. I've not upgraded the xboxs internal drive because it's still under warranty and it actually voids the warranty on that console as opposed to PS4 where it doesn't.

You know that could be correct as to the COD games. And I am like you. I honestly do not really play the multi-player online thing. I have played for the campaigns. Occasionally I go into the multi-player just to see how long I can survive lol.

There is an 8TB SSD Drive I have read that will fit in the PS4, but I just cannot bring myself to shelling out over $900.00 for that.
