Platinum Trophy #9: Marvel's Spider-Man

Date Earned: 16th September 2018

Dopamine Index:

I think it probably says a lot that I got the platinum for Marvel's Spider-Man within 10 days of launch. I looked back at the dates I earned each Trophy, and between launch and getting the platinum, I progressed the list almost every day.

Like most people with a PS4 at the time, I was totally hooked on this.

Insomniac Games, previously known best for the Ratchet & Clank series, took on one of the most beloved characters in fiction and absolutely knocked it out of the park.

Spider-Man is a superhero not starving for video games, either. His earliest entry into the medium was in 1982, and he's been swinging around our consoles ever since.

Here's a fun fact based on my cursory Wikipedia research. Since the aforementioned 1982 debut, the longest period of time we've gone without a new Spider-Man game is five years, between 1984 and 1989. Isn't that kinda crazy?

In those terms, I can't think of a more prolific character than the web-swinging, wall-crawling superhero.

Because of the sheer number of games he stars in, everyone is going to have a different favourite. For a long time, my favourite was Spider-Man 2, the PS2 movie tie-in that changed everything.

In a lot of ways, Marvel's Spider-Man owes a lot to that particular adventure, as it pioneered a lot of the stuff we take for granted now — an open world New York City, physical swinging with webs that actually attach to surfaces, and emergent crimes to fight while you explore.

The framework worked brilliantly in 2004, and Insomniac knew that. All it needed to do was modernise everything, and it was half-way to a fantastic Spidey game.

The other half is the story, and the studio decided to go its own way rather than follow any pre-existing storyline. It remixes a lot of elements fans are familiar with, keeping you guessing even if you've seen all the films and read all the comics.

The result is a refreshing new take on the Spider-Man universe that worked very nicely for me, as a fairly casual fan.

The Trophies themselves are indicative of the type of game this is; there aren't too many surprises in terms of structure, but you'll have a damn good time regardless.

You effectively have to 100% complete the game, finishing all the side missions, getting all the suits, and clearing each district of Manhattan.

It's about as popcorn blockbuster as video games get, but just executed extremely well. You're not playing the most innovative, unique game in the world, but man, it's really fun.

Cheers, Marvel's Spider-Man.

P.S: This edition of Going Platinum is the first that technically counts for two platinums — the original Marvel's Spider-Man and Marvel's Spider-Man Remastered, which unlocked automatically. I won't be writing about the remaster as it's essentially the same game, but I just thought I'd let you know.
