Streets of Rage 4 finally brings the classic series back, and it does so with plenty of style. Arcadey beat-'em-ups aren't as common as they used to be, but this modern iteration is about as good as they get. Crunchy, satisfying combat is the order of the day as endless goons populate the screen, lining up for a beatdown from classic characters and new ones alike. With both local and online play, you can clean up the streets with some buddies too.

Tactics Ogre: Reborn (PS5)

Tactics Ogre: Reborn revives a stone cold strategy RPG classic, and even packs some welcome quality of life improvements into the deal. This fantasy-driven adventure's methodical pacing won't be for everyone, but once you're in, you can absolutely lose yourself to the game's party-building mechanics, intricate storytelling, and engrossing tactical combat.

Tchia (PS5)

While it takes inspiration from a multitude of other titles, there are no other games quite like Tchia. Set in a fictional version of New Caledonia, you play as a girl who must rescue her father from a mysterious group. Before you reach that point, though, you've a whole archipelago you can freely explore, and it's stuffed with things to see and do. By possessing various objects and animals, you can truly see the map from all angles, then chill out by playing Tchia's ukulele at any time. Full of unique charm, this is an ambitious sandbox that's just fun to toy with.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge (PS5)

Inspired by the many beloved TMNT games of yesteryear, Shredder's Revenge is a wonderful beat-'em-up that blends old and new for a turtle-y refreshing experience. You can of course play as the reptilian quartet, but Splinter, April O'Neil, and an unlockable Casey Jones all join the fight too, each with unique stats. The game features gorgeous pixel art with superb animations, as well as an excellent soundtrack and varied, enjoyable stages to fight through. With co-op either locally or online, this is an incredibly enjoyable game to play with some pals and pizza.

The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles (PS4)

Set long before the events of the other Ace Attorney games, The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles turns back the clock to the 19th century. Focusing on the journey of rookie attorney Ryunosuke Naruhodo (ancestor of Phoenix Wright) and his friend Herlock Sholmes, this duology of games plays similarly to the rest of the series, but sets itself apart with a fresh setting and characters. On top of that, it features some of the best cases and storylines in the whole franchise. If you enjoy this quirky courtroom drama series, this is definitely worth playing.

The Last of Us Part I (PS5)

Forever tainted by its high launch price, The Last of Us Part I is a faithful remake of Naughty Dog's 2013 masterpiece that brings the post-apocalyptic adventure up to modern standards. While the gameplay is largely untouched, its visuals shine with stunning character models, gorgeous backdrops, and an abundance of detail to ensure there's something to look at in every corner. Some will forever question why it was needed, but The Last of Us: Part I has never looked better.

The Making of Karateka (PS5)

The Making of Karateka is a rare treat. It's part documentary, part archive, part collection of old games, and part remaster. It's also a wonderful example of just how far we can go with game preservation if we put the work in, and the gold standard for how we should approach collections of classic games going forward.

Growing a huge army of characters and finding unique ways to squad them up is the crux of the experience, and it only gets increasingly addictive as the adventure continues. Couple that with Vanillaware's amazing, trademark art direction, and you've got a surefire recipe for role-playing success.

Valiant Hearts: The Great War (PS4)

Valiant Hearts: The Great War is a poignant and powerful reminder of the significant human toll borne of the wars that we so often act out in our favourite video games. It doesn’t exaggerate or embellish its subject matter, but rather tells a story rooted in historical accuracy and human emotion. And while the puzzler’s gameplay isn’t revolutionary by any means, its awe-inspiring visual design, clever soundtrack, and thoughtful plot will break your heart in the best possible way.

Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap (PS4)

Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap is a super faithful remake of the classic Master System game, but it's utterly transformed by the beautiful new art style and revamped soundtrack. While the game's age somewhat shines through in the gameplay and design, this is still a wonderful platformer that has you transforming into various creatures with unique abilities. This is a good time whether or not you remember the original.

Zombie Army 4: Dead War (PS4)

Zombie Army 4: Dead War is one of the best co-operative focused games on PS4. Its meaty campaign boasts of impressive level variety, a superb control scheme, and enjoyable gameplay mechanics while a Horde mode tests your abilities to the max. Rebellion has crafted an experience with so much to see and do that it could take a group of players weeks to master everything on offer — a crowning success for this type of game. Zombie Army 4: Dead War is an absolute riot of a title that is just as cheeky as it is fun to play.
