The lack of arcade sports games has been one of the real downsides of this generation. Fortunately, developers are beginning to pay attention to the growing gap in the market. Street Power Soccer promises to resurrect the oft-underserved genre, with a mixture of freestyle football-inspired modes that “incorporate rhythm, precision, street style, and over-the-top superpowers”.

As the trailer embedded above reveals, you can expect to do keepie-uppies in breakdance-style competitions, or outskill your opponents in panna. ‘Megs! There are also matches that you can participate in, but you’ll have to play with panache in order to score big. “Street soccer is about more than just scoring goals against opponents but doing it with personalised style and flair,” explained Maximum Games’ Shawn Cotter on the PlayStation Blog. “You will be able to take your skills across an expansive single-player experience as well as local and online multiplayer modes for up to four players through a variety of different modes.”

There’s a campaign for you to complete, which will see your custom character training under the guidance of real-world star Séan Garnier. “Becoming the street king will not be easy, as you can expect to face-off against other freestyle soccer greats like Liv Cooke, Melody Donchet, Soufiane Bencok, Daniel Got Hits, Raquel Benetti, and Andrew Henderson as you ball to a hyped-up soundtrack featuring works by The Black Eyed Peas, DJ Snake, Snap, and many more.”

The gameplay looks a bit suspect in the trailer embedded above; the motion capture is undoubtedly impressive, but the ball physics don’t look particularly consistent at all. Nevertheless, games like this are all about “feel”, and you can only really determine that once you get your hands on the game. Are you looking forward to an alternative football title?
