Last week, CD Projekt Red announced that it was delaying Cyberpunk 2077. It's a hefty delay, too -- the open world role-playing game has been pushed all the way into September when it was originally planned for an April release. Time and again, the Polish developer has said that the game is only planned for current-gen consoles, but now that it's seemingly launching so close to the PlayStation 5 -- expected to hit in October or November -- fans have started to wonder whether things have changed.
But according to CD Projekt Red, the studio's plan remains the same. In the company's latest investor's call, it states that while it's "thinking" about the next PlayStation and Xbox, "Cyberpunk is right now heading for PS4, Xbox One, and PC. Nothing has changed in regards to the plans".
It adds: "We’re of course looking at the next generation all the time. We’re privy to a lot of information on what’s going on with these platforms, but frankly speaking, we have nothing to share now related to that."
So yes, Cyberpunk 2077 is still aiming for a PS4 release, but honestly, can you see it skipping PS5? Even if it isn't on Sony's next-gen system at launch, we think an eventual re-release is nailed on. Of course, we don't yet know the ins and outs of Sony's plans for backwards compatibility, making these kinds of scenarios more difficult to predict, but we just can't see a future in which Cyberpunk 2077 -- easily one of the most anticipated games of the last decade -- is confined to current-gen consoles.
What do you think? Will Cyberpunk 2077 end up on PS5? Raise some suspicions in the comments section below.

They're hardly likely to tell us that it'll launch a month or so later on next gen and have so many people just wait until those versions come out. Maybe they'll wait until they confirm what happens regarding cross gen games and whether using a PS4 disc will allow us to download the PS5 version
maybe they cant say anything for certain reasons. Maybe u can just put the disk in ps5 and you get the improvements. But they cant tell us that.
Im calling that at E3 Microsoft and CDPR will announce a partnership where the Series X will receive exclusive content in Cyberpunk and the new release date will coincidentally be close or actually on the release date of the Series X.
It’ll either be that the PS4 version will get a PS5 patch day one or there will be a specific PS5 version. I bet the reason they can’t say is that Sony hasn’t announced cross gen plans yet. It might be that all eligible games get a PS5 patch. Or that they’ll need a specific PS5 version. Either way I imagine it will be worth waiting and playing the stock PS4 version on PS5 just for the faster loading times etc
PS5 version will be better visuals and frame-rate, but unless it's built from the ground up for PS5 we can't expect it to differ to much to the PS4 Pro version.
@Deadhunter it will. But the PS5 will play PS4 games so you'd still be able to get it even if it didn't.
The fact that they are not saying there will or won't be a next gen port I could see it be released September normally and then have a day one patch ready for Mid November when the next gen systems launch for upgraded textures, lighting and frame rate.
This is similar to when Borderlands The Handsome Collection got a 4K Texture Update specifically for PS4 Pro and XB1X
Either way, the delay has me now waiting on concrete info about the PS5 version before committing to playing it on PS4 at release. The PS4 backlog will be huge at that point and it makes sense to wait on the next gen status of the game, which will likely have at least minor (and probably major) improvements over playing on PS4.
@Th3solution It will either be a day one enhancement patch or a fully built up enhanced edition with better visuals, exclusive content and more.
I bought the gta5 for ps3 and when it came out to ps4, the graphics were so much better, but I never bought it again.
So, if there's a chance for cyberpunk to come to ps5, I NEED TO KNOW THAT RIGHT NOW. lol.
On the other hand, a patch would be, just, amazing.
Sometimes I think this game is possibly being held together with the same sort of coding duct tape that is rumoured to be the reason why RDR 1 never got the GTA V remaster treatment! Still, putting that aside,I agree with the logic a timed exclusive XB next gen release/update or eventual remaster with multiplayer added makes more sense. CD Project Red seemed quite content to proritize XBX enhancements vs ps4 pro with Witcher 3.
@DonJorginho Yeah, that makes sense. If it’s a day one patch, then I’ll buy the PS4 launch version for $60.
If it’s a fully built enhanced version with exclusive content then I’ll wait until I get a PS5 and buy it later at the most likely higher price (probably $70 for PS5 games, I’m guessing)
@Th3solution Do you really think there will be a price hike?
If that is the case games like Godfall will take more convincing for me to buy them.
I was putting money aside to preorder this and was about to pull the trigger when the delay was announced. Now I’m not going to preorder it as the PS5 is potentially out the next month. I don’t see myself investing in a PS4 game a month before the next gen comes out. If they’d said all along that it would have a PS5 patch or something, this wouldn’t be an issue. But because they’re sticking to their PS4-only guns right now? I’ve lost interest in purchasing the game at this time. When they release a PS5 patch/version, I’ll pick the game up then. Possibly at a discount.
@DonJorginho I think so. I have nothing to base this on other than gut instinct, but I feel like we’re due for a price hike on AAA games next gen.
Cross-gen titles are the wild card though. If there is scant difference between playing a game on PS4 vs. through BC on PS5 then why would I pay more for the PS5 version? That why I say if the PS5 version of Cyberpunk has extra content, then it will probably cost more. But who knows? I can never guess how these publishers come to their decisions.
CDP is dumb if they don't have cyberpunk ps5 version ready at launch or at least in the launch window of ps5 release.
Wasn't full PS4 compatibility confirmed, its just the older consoles that are in question? Anyway seems likely that Cyberpunk will work on PS5 just without using the extra power, this will come later via patch or (perhaps) a payable upgrade?
Suuuure...
They once said they won't patch Witcher 3 for the PS4 pro, and then a year later they changed their minds.
@OmegaStriver I don't ever see that happening. CD Projekt are very against exclusive content.
Until we fully know how the PS5 handles PS4 games it's all speculation. I'm personally going to play it the second it becomes available, I can always replay it again if a superior version comes later. It's going to be all over the internet as soon as it launches and I'd rather experience it all myself first.
What we need now is Sony to announce a release date for the PS5............That way Game developers can start talking again it seems the industry is in "can't say too much mode" at the moment.
@I_Like_It Since this is a multi-platform release, which includes PCs that do support raytracing, I think PS5 enhancements are very possible.
@BearsEatBeets We will see if they hold to that. Big money changes companies regardless of how people below head management feel.
I'm buying it the f**k twice, samurai.
I do not see a PS5 version being released anywhere near the current gen versions. There will maybe a patch for the ps5 echancments, but we are not sure how all of that will work yet. In the past CDPR have mainly concentrated on one thing at a time and going by there comments, again I do not see that happening near the current gen versions.
They are just saying the game will still be released on PS4, but you can be 180% sure it will get a PS5 version. The game takes advantage of the latest pc hardware with ray tracing. They would be crazy not to also release it on the PS5. I'll personally wait for the PS5 version
i will wait for a ps5 release.
I’m sure we’ll get a PS5 version in the same timeframe as we got the PS4 Version of the Witcher 2.
The PS5 will simply be like the PC version that has the RayTracing global illumination and reflections.
Yup you cant wait all you want to, I will drop my huge backlog and play CyberPunk 2077 day one. It would be so great if cross gen games could just have a sliding scale in them.
@OmegaStriver Meh
@OmegaStriver I'd be so pissed if that was the case. One of the reasons why I hate Rockstar.
This is absolutely getting a next-gen patch or version at some point. CDProjektRed isn't going to leave the game it has spent the last eight years developing trapped on weak last gen consoles.
I'm building a new PC this year with Cyberpunk in mind. I'm barely able to hit 60fps most of the time in The Witcher 3, and that's a nearly five-year-old game.
