25. N++ (PS4)

Publisher: Metanet Software / Developer: Metanet Software
Release Date: 28th Jul 2015 (USA) / 28th Jul 2015 (UK/EU)

If you ever do reach the end of this game’s ridiculous amount of single player content, there’s a lengthy couch co-op mode to try your hand at too. This tricky platformer’s bespoke co-operative levels force two players to work together to reach the goal, with switches only accessible to one player, or the need for self sacrifice to allow the other to run to the end. It’s difficult, and it could end longstanding friendships, but instant restarts and the satisfaction of success will keep you glued to the screen.

24. Castle Crashers Remastered (PS4)

Publisher: The Behemoth / Developer: The Behemoth
Release Date: 17th Sep 2019 (USA) / 17th Sep 2019 (UK/EU)

Castle Crashers caused a stir back on PS3 with its brash, cartoonish style and delightfully chaotic co-op. This is retained wonderfully in the PS4 remaster. Up to four players, either online or locally, can join forces to save the princesses in this fast-paced and very silly action game. Unlock a huge variety of weapons, upgrade your characters, and beat up baddies with your pals. It's simple, but very satisfying.

23. The Swords of Ditto (PS4)

Publisher: Devolver Digital / Developer: onebitbeyond
Release Date: 24th Apr 2018 (USA) / 24th Apr 2018 (UK/EU)

You can of course play The Swords of Ditto alone, but it's clear this cartoonish adventure game is built for two. Playing in local co-op is the best way to experience this game, which is a mix of Zelda-esque action and rogue-lite elements. Tackling the randomised dungeons and thwarting the evil witch's plans is even more enjoyable with a friend in tow.

22. Grand Theft Auto V (PS4)

Publisher: Rockstar / Developer: Rockstar North
Release Date: 18th Nov 2014 (USA) / 18th Nov 2014 (UK/EU)

Grand Theft Auto V’s three-pronged campaign already feels like it should be a perfect fit for coop, but it’s with GTA Online’s Heist missions that developer Rockstar North has at last realised the juggernaut series’ collaborative potential. With each player assuming a different cog in an increasingly complicated criminal crusade, this is some of the most compelling co-op you’ll find on the PS4.

Publisher: Ubisoft / Developer: Ubisoft Montpellier
Release Date: 18th Feb 2014 (USA) / 21st Feb 2014 (UK/EU)

Rayman’s most recent adventure is excellent when playing solo, but introducing more players to the mix turns the fun factor up to 11. You can either cooperate to find collectibles and make navigation easier, or you can drive your buddies mad with some needless slaps to the face. However you decide to play, this quality cartoon platformer will entertain you and your friends for hours.
