Inside is 2D platforming perfection, but it’s the ending that we all remember it for. After two or so hours of impressive puzzle-solving and hints that something isn’t quite right, the game goes off the rails with a 20-minute sequence that is perhaps one of the most memorable of the PS4 generation. An incredible game that has cemented Playdead’s position amongst the gaming greats.
Giant Sparrow scoffs at the idea of the “walking simulator” with What Remains of Edith Finch - a bona fide indie masterpiece. As you explore the confines of an abandoned family home, you’ll come across scenes that transport you to all manner of different worlds. From the bathtub to the fishing cannery, it’s a special experience unlike any other.
3. The Witness
Announced alongside the PlayStation 4 itself, Jonathan Blow's latest head-scratching puzzler is a modern classic. The Witness plops you down on a mysterious island dotted with hundreds of panels, each with a grid-based conundrum for you to solve. The non-linear design means you're free to tackle them in any order, but the real genius of the game is the way it teaches you its unique language. Masterfully designed, gorgeous, and totally original, this isn't just one of PS4's best indies, it's one of its best games full stop.
The power of PlayStation Plus propelled Rocket League to stardom. Initially a fairly compact arcade game about cars playing football, it's evolved to become massively popular, and for good reason. The physics-based gameplay is easy to pick up, but the skill ceiling is sky high. Scoring a goal and winning one of the game's five-minute matches is endlessly satisfying, and Psyonix has only improved and added to the experience over the years. This indie mega-hit provides one of the most fun experiences you'll find on PS4.
