Media Molecule’s been saying that Dreams’ beta will launch “this year” since, like, 2015 – but it seems certain we’ll all be creating before the end of 2018. Speaking as part of a rapid fire question session with Game Informer magazine, co-founder Alex Evans said that the beta’s due at some point this year, so we suppose you should expect it soon.
Even better, all of the creations published in the beta will carry across to the final release, so there’s plenty of encouragement to dig in and make something amazing for launch day. Fascinatingly, each player will have a rating based on what they do in the game, so you’ll be able to search for ‘Level 50’ animators or ‘Level 100’ composers when you’re looking for assets for your own creations.

I bet if you search for 'Level 9000 Spider-Man fan', you'll find @kyleforrester87
This year? Fiscal year, calendar year or a year on Pluto?
Because its October. Start selling people on this game.
They can do a beta in December, I think that's fine.
@Knuckles-Fajita Depends on when the game comes out.
@Knuckles-Fajita They also talk about how they refuse to crunch in the video, something I’m sure you’re supportive of.
Seems like bull**** but we'll see
As with KH3 I'll believe it when I'm in front of my TV and physically playing it ...
@get2sammyb That's fine. Their refusal to do so is good.
I fully support that decision.
But if they refuse to crunch, and thus want to spend time making their game without effectively assassinating their staff...why was this game announced in 2013? Did they fall to feature creep and expect it to be done sooner?
Honestly this game would be a good lesson for them, as they are crunch-averse, to announce a game only as the project begins to close.
Maybe I will try to create something, even if I'm lazy AF.
@Knuckles-Fajita Don’t you think if they had gone radio silent since 2013, working on this in secret without publicly showing it, all the same questions would be asked of them except even more intensely?
@get2sammyb I thought you summed up everything nicely in the opening half sentence.
@Octane Any search for 9000 always leads to Vegeta.
If this beta goes live on December 31 at 11:59:59, that counts as it's being released in 2018, right?
Don't want to sound cynical, but I don't believe it.
The beta will release this year
In our Dreams.
Aaaaand there's the exit
Can't wait, I hope there's good single player campaign in this game. There should be almost infinity levels from other players though lol.
@get2sammyb That's good, rather keep the number of people low and taking as long as they need to when making games rather than hiring hundreds of employees and firing them when things get tough like telltale.
@knucles_fajita The was only announced in 2015, 2013 was just a proof of concept tech demo.
People need to understand that MM aren't only creating a very ambitious game their also having to create an entirely new engine from scratch and that takes arguably more time then making the actual game itself. Look at other examples like FF XV that took a long time cos it was been made on a new engine till it switched to Unreal or Deep Down which was meant to be a showcase for Capcom's new engine. Put simply there's a reason many developers use of the shelf engines for their games but it isn't something you can do with Dreams.
... as long as it ships with full VR support (inc. the beta), then they can release it 2020 for all I care... will probably be better with PSVR 2.0 anyway...
@OneManDroid It will. Confirmed VR compatibility at launch.
EDIT: In fact, I'll do an article on that.
@Octane stop trolling me
I'd say I can't wait, but history disproves that as I've been waiting years already. I just have to not think about it.
