Er, what the bloomin' heck is going on here, then?

With so many games looking and playing the same these days, it’s become quite easy to explain the mechanics in any given title. However, curious PlayStation 4 first-person shooter VizionEck remains beyond baffling – and that’s even after we’ve read the developer’s full gameplay explanation. Due out in late 2014, the indie release sees you controlling a black and white box known as a Ranger, and attempting to take out your fellow monochrome foes.

Sounds simple enough on the surface, but this is anything but straightforward. By killing your opponents you’ll increase your manoeuvrability, allowing you to access different areas of the vertical maps. Coloured surfaces allow you to bounce even higher or even turn the rules of the arena on its head, while you can also access different Charge Blocks – or weapons – which have unique advantages and disadvantages in combat.

Due to the design of the game, you’ll become harder to spot as your health lowers, and you’ll also be impossible to see when you respawn, solving the camping issues that affect other outings in the genre. It’s a fascinating premise, but it’s hard to pull people away from Battlefield and Call of Duty at the best of times, so we’re not convinced that this is going to catch the average gamer’s eye. Kudos to the developer for the unorthodox concept, though.
