Japanese Sales Charts: Toukiden Prompts Vita to Surge

System shoots up the hardware charts

PlayStation Vita sales have been steady if unspectacular in Japan since the system’s surprise price drop earlier in the year, but the release of Monster Hunter-esque action game Toukiden really gave the console a jolt of energy in the region this week. Hardware sales more than doubled, resulting in an impressive 31,271 units sold. The title itself shifted a whopping 122,794 units on Sony’s latest handheld, and a further 66,016 units on the PlayStation Portable.

Despite the strong sales, the Omega Force developed title was not the biggest new release of the week, with Gundam Breaker for the PlayStation 3 moving just over 200,000 units in the same period. Its outstanding performance did little to drive hardware sales, however, with Sony’s primary home console shifting just 12,554 units – a sign that the system may be reaching saturation point in the portable obsessed region.

Elsewhere, Naughty Dog’s survival horror opus The Last of Us continued its impressive performance, moving a further 32,472 units after last week’s strong debut. Several new Western produced PS3 titles also made the charts, with The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim - Legendary Edition and Sniper: Ghost Warrior 2 launching in 14th and 15th respectively. You can peruse the full rundown of hardware and software sales below.

The Vita should sell well in Japan because of Ys Celceta alone! (which was released last year)

Famitsu gave the PS Vita version of Toukiden the scores 9/8/8/9. So, very high.
And yes. It gets a Western release too. (Q4, 2013)

What's this? A Gundam game topping the Japanese charts again? Man, if we got only a quarter of those games localised...

If this keeps up in Japan, just maybe they will do a price drop for other regions too.

Just saying anyways on the matter at hand. :)
