Watch out for the belly flop

Sony’s released two more videos in its PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale strategy series. This time the spotlight is on Fat Princess and Sly Cooper – two of the more unusual fighters in the mascot mash-up’s celebrity roster.

Speaking on the PlayStation Blog, senior combat designer Edward Ma explained that Fat Princess was a challenging character to design because she never actually fights in her native game. “She’s a character that went through several radical changes in her design,” he said. “At one point, we even had plans for her to grow larger depending on the amount of cake she ate mid-battle.”

Of course, when she’s not bundling her enormous mass around, Fat Princess is able to call upon the help of her minions. “We ended up choosing an assist-style design in which different classes of villagers come to Fat Princess’ aid briefly for a quick attack, including the Worker, Mage and Warrior,” Ma added.

Fat Princess is described as a “heavy-duty combo-heavy character”, which we suppose makes sense considering her gigantic weight. Just don’t expect all of the bloodshed to put her off her cake.

Meanwhile, Sly is a much more furtive foe. The light-fingered raccoon takes advantage of stealth, agility and tricks to conquer his opponents. “Sly’s design draws inspirations from all of the previous Sly titles, including the newest instalment Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time,” Ma explained.

Sly is equipped with numerous gadgets from Sucker Punch’s popular platforming series, including the smoke bomb and cane. In an interesting twist, the character lacks the ability to block, opting for a sneakier invisibility mechanic instead.

“Players who like a mischievous, tricky play style will feel right at home playing as Sly Cooper,” Ma concluded. “As a treat for all loyal Sly fans, you will get some help from Sly’s gang as well. Murray, Carmelita and Bentley are ready to assist you anytime that super bar is filled up.”
