Final Fantasy XIII-2's opening numbers were significantly lower than its predecessor.

There's often not much to commentate on, but this week is huge. Final Fantasy XIII-2 topped the Media Create sourced charts, selling over 500k units on the PlayStation 3. While the numbers look impressive on their own, it's worth noting that the game's predecessor managed to sell 1.1 million units back in 2009.

The other big debut of the week was the PlayStation Vita, which managed to sell 325k units as per reports earlier this morning. Four of the system's launch titles made their way into the multiformat top twenty, with Hot Shots Golf 6 and Uncharted: Golden Abyss appearing in seventh and eighth respectively. Dynasty Warriors Next and Lord Of Apocalypse were the only other PS Vita titles to chart.

Despite a strong showing, the PS Vita was unable to stave off the threat of the resurging 3DS, which managed to outsell Sony's new handheld by some 40k units. Remember when we said earlier in the year that Sony was taking too long to put the PS Vita onto store shelves? Yeah.

What's most interesting is that, despite the PS Vita's release, the PSP continued to post strong hardware numbers. It sold 65k units for the week — just a thousand less than the PlayStation 3 which was boosted by the release of a new Final Fantasy game. Impressive stuff. With numerous high profile PSP titles scheduled to release right throughout 2012, we wonder if the handheld's continued success in Japan will impact the PS Vita in any way.
