Topic: Playstation Direct unilaterally cancelling orders?

Hi, I ordered a PS5 from direct.playstation.com yesterday, having sat in their queue for ages. All seemed fine.

Then today I got an email saying my order has been cancelled.

Has anybody else experienced this? It's pretty poor, implies they don't have a clue what stock they've actually got.

@wanstronian All I know is that they cancel orders due to numerous reasons - not just 'stock' but they also check whether or not you have a PS5 as they clearly state only 1 per 'household/account', not selling to 'bots' etc. Its possible they take 'more' orders than they have in 'anticipation' that 'some' orders will be cancelled due to those 'reasons'. Once they have assessed all the 'earlier' orders and determined whether or not they will dispatch their 'limited' supply and all stock is allocated, the later orders get cancelled.

If you have say 5000 units and expect that 10-20% of those could be Bots or people trying to get 2nd+ consoles when they clearly state that they are only selling to Playstation gamers who have not been able to purchase a PS5 yet. So they take '6000' orders to account for up to 20% of 'cancellations' which would delay them getting consoles out and having to 'readvertise'. Then find out only 10% of the first 5000 orders are 'cancelled' (so 500 extra consoles available), which go to the next '500' people on the order list but that leaves 500 extra orders that they don't have 'stock' for now so also have to cancel those orders.

Its a classic business move, take 'more' initial orders than you know you'll have stock for so that if, for whatever reason, those orders are cancelled, they have the 'next' person on the list waiting. I've been 'lucky' on a couple of occasions in the past when pre-ordering 'extremely' limited editions where I was number 4 of 3 that store was getting, and for whatever reason, get a call from the store asking if I still wanted said item...
