I'm not sure when this problem started, but it must have been weeks back. I have a playstation 4 model CUH-1115A. I've had this playstation 4 since april 8, 2015.

The console doesn't read certain game discs, but does read others. Here is a list

1. Batman arkham knight - yes

2. Call of duty black ops lll - yes

3. Doom - yes

4. Gran turismo sport - yes

5. Lego star wars the force awakens - no

6. Nascar heat evolution - no

7. Need for speed - no

8. Overide mech city brawl - no

9. Prey - yes

10. Redout - no

11. Truck racing - no

12. Uncharted the lost legacy - yes

13. Until dawn - yes

14. Until dawn rush of blood - no

15. Vr worlds - no

16. Vr demo disc - yes

17. Vr karts - no

18. Watchdogs 2 - yes

19. yakuza 0 - no

20. yakuza 6 - yes

21. yakuza kiwami - no

22. yakuza kiwami - yes

23. Zombi army trilogy - no

The playstation 4 has never has any parts replaced. All discs were bought brand new and the ps4 isn't jailbroken in any way.

I'd use a cleaning disc, but apparently, the other laser has failed for reading a dvd.

I have my playstation 4 horizonally. I did try vertically, but that didn't solve the problem. I also tried rebuilding the data base, but that didn't solve the problem.

My guess would be that the blu ray drive isn't reading dual layer blu ray discs but does read single layer blu ray discs.

My game saves and trophies are backed up though so it's not like I'd lose anything that can't be replaced.

It seems like the solution would be to replace the blu ray disk. That isn't hard to do, but I have conflicting information.

I have a repair guide from the website ifixit.com and the guide mentions that if you have a playstation 4 that starts with model number 1xxxx, the disc drive board is paired with the motherboard. Since playstation 4 motherboards don't seem to be available or would be too expensive to purchase, since the cost of one is probably more then the cost of a ps4 new or used, the disc drive can't be replaced.

However, if you know your model number, which I do for the ps4 console, you can get a replacement disc drive off of amazon, swap the disc drive board onto the new drive and everything is good to go. I did this with my ps3 some time ago.

So my question is, can I replace the disk drive or am I out of luck?

Doing some more research, a repair guide that I have says that if your ps4 starts with a 1xxx, the optical drive is paired with the motherboard. My ps4 model is CUH-1115A so unless the repair guide has wrong info, I can't replace the optical drive. Is this true?

The model number of the disk drive is BDP-025.
