Just because a business decision is backed up by solid business logic from the best business thinkers in the world, doesn't mean it's not greedy or evil. In fact, that almost guarantees it is in fact going to be something greedy and evil. Sony isn't special in this regard - look at any large corporations you can think of. At the end of the day, yes, they're going to make the decision that's best for the business, best for the shareholders, and best for their profit increases. Just because that's the status quo or the modus operandi for corporations, that doesn't justify it or make it an amoral decision.
Everyone should feel free to criticize decisions made by corporations that shaft the little guy - there's way more of us than there are of those at the top. But pretending we have any say in changing those decisions is a joke - buy a PS5 or don't buy one, Sony won't care or be affected unless there's large organizing for a boycott, or extensive public outcry criticizing this decision (a decision which, let's remember, is perfectly "valid" and normal to the business world, so good luck with that).
@KundaliniRising333 That's the best and most thoughtful take I've seen on this matter.
Some would still like to believe that large multinational corporations make decisions based on what's best for the consumer and not what's best for the shareholders. Fact is, businesses operate on a need to always increase profits - as you say, a model of infinite growth in a world of finite resources. It's a pipe dream, and it's unsustainable, but it makes the rich richer for now, and they call the shots.
It's not about fairness or worldwide equity or whatever else - unless those things affect profit margins.
I'm not saying anyone should or shouldn't be mad at Sony for this decision. But no one should be surprised.
