Sony knows that retailers will eventually stop selling those code slips because there won't be enough demand. As someone who enjoys collecting physical games, I still wouldn't buy a code at a retail store because it's at that point no different from purchasing directly through the PS Store.
Sony knows this. Combined with skewed statistics like "85% of game sales are digital" they will use that narrative to justify moving to a future with only the PSN store.
The PS6 most likely won't be a console for me. In fact, I'm almost certain it won't be until at least 2029 or later and only if Sony starts releasing bangers again. Their pursuit of a live-service hit has already come at the expense of the type of exclusives I enjoyed.
I'm also not interested in a future where Sony has a complete monopoly over game purchases through its own store. Losing the second-hand market and retailers that often sell new games for €20–40 less than the PS Store removes any incentive for Sony to lower prices in their store for the lease of a license. The wording Sony used in their announcement of the PS3 store closure, that users would be able to download previously purchased content "for the foreseeable future", already told me everything I needed to know.
Instead, I'll invest in upgrading my PC. At least there will still be actual competition between storefronts, and services like GOG offer DRM-free games that I can genuinely own.
I was somewhat excited about the next generation. Even a $1,000 price tag is simply the current reality of modern hardware and I would have been ready to spend that depending on what Sony offers. But their decision to end physical media will most likely make me switch after 19 years with PlayStation and even in the 1 out of 10000 scenario that they reverse course... too much trust has been lost I think
