@Runex2121 Because you want someone that knows of the genre to be able to make comparisons in within similar games, get into the depths of execution and how it fares versus other experiences that have attempted to do so. A reviewer that has experience with games that play similar is able to understand the context as well as the expectations of its target audience. When a reviewer knows their subject, they provide well-reasoned arguments rather than simple "I liked it" or "I didn't like it" reactions. This expertise builds credibility, making the audience trust their recommendations in the future.
I would argue that an outsider review that is someone that comes from outside the field and represents the common person who is not knowledgeable on the subject that he is tasked to review, still holds some importance but it should be a second opinion and not the major one.
@RicebinBernacky I agree on this. Nothing against the reviewer but if you dont like the genre.. it feels like a torture to be even doing this for a job lol. I imagine if someone forced me to review racing games or soccer games, there is no way I would be able to write a decent piece of opinion without my personal dislike blending in.
My take is that they do that to try to encourage people to eventually take up the challenge if they want to take the achievements. I see it as as a dare that the developers are raising to the player. Do you want to take it or not? Up to you.
@Skinny-Pete Remember that these are japanese companies. Japan playerbase is small compared to the rest of the world but for both Sony and Nintendo doing good in their homecountry is not only a strategic target but also an historical one.
This is a weird news article... It reads more like an opinion/editorial because of the amount of judgement and moral stance. This is coming from someone who considers himself both left winged and also supportive of DEI practices, but trying to antagonize and create enemies based on their choices (which they are allowed to have as long as they dont deny others) is not what we should be striving for Diversity and Equity.
If people enjoy seeing female characters with skimpy armor.. let that be. It is part of diversity to have that too. We got to push for more options, not less.
In this case I think the article point would be better expressed if they mentioned how many armors are skimpy vs fully covered. That would create some perspective in terms of ratio and proportion which is way more interesting than just screaming to the internet because you saw 3 or 4 skimpy armors. That sounds prude and conservative if anything... which is not going to get you any friends.
@get2sammyb I get what you mean for a lot of popular voice actors like Troy Baker and Laura Bailey, but Ben Starr? The man has only single personality in VA and he is always hired for that specific personality. Nothing against him since he is funny and a real nice guy but talent wise he is very monotone.
This is an interestic topic but I would not reach the same conclusion of this article that action based mechanics is what they are referring to. I say its more about player choices and how the game is paced which seems to be changing from the classic jrpg formula. Still excited for what's to come.
Is that really supposed to be Gustav in Nomura artstyle? It looks so different... I thought it was Verso.. or even Renoir by how much older he looks like.
The article is kinda showing the two sides of the coin. They do mention that "... "I personally believe that, with digital entertainment today, the player should have the choice in how they interact with content. That’s why I pushed for it"
But then just a sentences later, it goes the other way with... "If we were to add [progression features] to the third installment at launch, it would probably spark controversy. We’d risk disrupting the experience for fans who have been waiting the longest and deserve to enjoy it the most".
You can literally see the internal debate that everyone has reflected in the devs themselves. I feel there is no easy way out of this discussion.
@PuppetMaster I believe what most people meant for that is the Yoshi P interview for FF16. Its not neccesarily outdated but rather saying that it clashes with their "idea" of realism in videogames.
Quoted from that interview: "Yoshida-san continues, "one thing that we found recently is that as graphics get better and better, and as characters become more realistic and more photo-real, is that the combination of that realism with the very unreal sense of turn-based commands doesn't really fit together. You have this kind of strange gap that emerges."

Did you really make a news article of 2 tweet posts. 2 random posts that you grabbed from the sea of social media comments.
