I think that just like the Watchdogs delay, this one will actually benefit the game in the long run. Driveclub isn't going to be a system seller, but it probably is going to be a fun game. But it didn't have any buzz. Nobody was really talking about it much, and if it launched with 20 other games, it was going to be drowned out and forgotten about. Sure you'll have a group of driving fans, but I'm pretty sure it wouldn't do all that well on its own. Now, Sony can release it in January/February when nothing else is coming out and people are itching for something new. It can get a big launch all its own with a lot more hype that it would get on day one.
The way I see it, this device has certain advantages that a Roku or AppleTV just don't have. First is that it's being sold almost as an accessory for the PS4. People will pick one up, either for themselves or for their kids, and once it's in the house, why would they bother with another streaming device? It's bought as a gaming console/accessory, but much like the PS3 it ends up being a media hub as well.
Also, this device would be sold in stores where Rokus are not. Video game stores will stock them as will the big box stores. A Playstation video game console for $99? Hell, I bet a lot of people would pay that just out of curiousity.
And as far as touch controls are concerned, I'm hoping they phase them out. I can't think of one instance where the touch screen makes a game better on any of the Vita games. I prefer not having to take my fingers off the controls to swipe or tap the screen.
My gut feeling is that it is not going to be backward compatible. At least it won't be compatible with blu-ray discs for the PS3, but as other's have suggested, I think that downloaded titles from PSN will all work. I'm not sure how this will happen, but I think it explains their strong push over the past year for people to buy downloadable games. It also explains why PS+ is such an incredible deal. They know the new system won't be backward compatible but they also know that unless you have some sort of game lock-in, there's nothing to stop people from jumping ship to a competing platform. But if they can carry over all those PSN games they've purchased, that gives them incentive to stick with Sony.

Re: Talking Point: Are You in Tune with Sony's Multifunctional PS Vita TV?
I'm all in with the VitaTV. I want one day one.
