Re: Genshin Impact Off-Screen Gameplay Doesn't Do Zelda Comparison Any Favours

@Matroska "Hundreds of games had gliding in before BotW too (e.g. Sonic and Knuckles, then later Sonic Adventure, had climbing then gliding off, who accused BotW of copying that?). This is what RogerRoger is talking about, Nintendo imitate things that have been done countless times before and then get treated as if they invented it when the next similar game comes along."

This is such a weak argument lol, just because it's been done before doesn't mean it's been done well. Perfecting and refining on what already exists is something games have done for as long as they've existed. Nintendo isn't doing anything wrong on that part, and what people do praise BOTW for isn't even the paragliding in the first place. Zelda is an experience and it rightly deserves praise for creating a seamless open world that you can explore how you want to, with whatever tools you want to, climb whatever you want to and do literally whatever you want. Zelda gives the player a level of freedom with little to stand between the player and completing the game within a matter of minutes. The very principle of Breath Of The Wild is why it is so innovative, no game does it quite like Zelda and no game has since.

@RogerRoger The thing about Breath Of The Wild is it does it well, it culminates years of research on the part of Nintendo to produce their first truly non-linear game in more than 2 decades. Sure there are parts that have existed in other games, but then you could say that about literally every game that has ever existed, original ideas died a very long time ago. What BOTW does is fuse many different ideas and create a smooth and intuitive experience. What you seem not to understand (understandably for what is a playstation-centric website) is that Nintendo makes games better than their contemporaries on the part of the fact their games inspired the games that BOTW "copies", which I use lightly because no game has all of these features with the same scope and depth as BOTW (think of just cause which is another sandbox with literally no depth other than to destroy things and a half baked story.)
No one is a fanboy if they think BOTW did the open world the best, they're just stating an opinion that is held by a majority of people and it makes sense when you understand what it sets out to achieve and does almost perfectly. That is to say it isn't without it's shortcomings like it's weaker narrative that only exists as a reason to have you explore it's world and the dungeons that felt quite cookie cutter other than their sheer spectacle when seen from afar.
