I don't know how you feel about backwards compatibility now, but in general I just want to say that it really won't be too big an issue. The PS3 is going down in price, the PS4 is made to play PS4 games, so it doesn't make sense for Sony or for Microsoft to spend money and resources implementing backwards compatibility--especially when you consider that halfway through this next generation people will be growing less and less interested in the PS3 and its games to begin with. What they're doing with Gaikai is far more sustainable and, if you think about it, is a form of backward compatibility all the way back to PSOne.
While I'm sure this is pretty close, I'm positive this is not exactly the interface we will receive at launch. What Sony has teased so far has quite a bit more polish on it. It would also be a mistake, @ViciousDS, to pull spec information from this, as this is an early dev unit. As far as layout, however, this is probably rather close
Just because a company jumps on the bandwagon and put out a mass email saying "Last Chance Saloon" doesn't mean it's really Last Chance Saloon. I feel like that email was just like the media buzz. Someone over at Simply Games read some of the buzz from the media and was just like "Well let's use this to promote some sales."
Not saying the UK limit is false or anything, but you really can't believe anything you read, and this doesn't exactly prove (or disprove) anything.
@Hollgburg1 I don't know where you got the info that Microsoft is shipping ANYTHING. The consoles haven't launched yet. What "statistics are showing?" Are you talking about the media articles about that one analyst? No statistics have been published yet. There's also a difference between shipping and production. COULD they outship the PS4? Sure, if enough people order it (which "statistics show" is not happening at the moment), they can--but they have to produce the consoles first.
His allegation isn't without foundation. There are still rumors that the innards of the Xbone will be changed, and Microsoft still seems to be changing things around in the way of policies and accessories and features. Sounds like they're behind on something to me.
It's odd to speculate that Sony would have introduced Microsoft's DRM policies if Xbox weren't around. It isn't impossible, and I'm sure the gaming world would be entirely different right now had Microsoft not started Xbox back in PS2 days, but I'm giving them no awards for it. They didn't come into the gaming world with a "Let's form competition to save the industry! " mindset. They came to it as a business, and they did well.
I agree with you about competition, and I agree with you that the console industry needs Microsoft and Sony (or at the very least, two major parties) to further that competition. I agree that we need both consoles to be successful. That said, I'm a PlayStation fan. I want Microsoft to succeed. The industry needs them to, but even so, PlayStation has worked hard and done everything right so far and I'm really rooting for them. I feel that this time around, they really deserve the crown. It's perfectly normal to support your favorite brand (though not to the extent of some fanboys), and to want your favorite to beat the competition, but @ViciousDS didn't say anything about wanting Microsoft to fail.
Further, he's right. A late October/early November launch makes perfect sense for Sony at this point. It will get PS4 in peoples' minds long before Xbox is there, it will allow them to ship consoles and refresh the supply before Black Friday comes around, and further their early advantage. Whether we like this or hate this, that's definitely an option that makes a lot of sense for them.
Further, maybe a win for PlayStation might calm some of the rabid fanboys down. It might show them, at least a little, what many knew all along: that both consoles can shine.
Microsoft is still getting it together. There's a rumor of an Xbone "reintroduction" at Gamescom, and I hope they are successful going forward. Despite Microsoft's scrambling, Xbox One, as it is now, seems on paper like a very solid machine. Even so, I'm still hoping that PlayStation wins the US market over this time around--and so far, they seem to have done just that.
I suppose it might, but where did you hear that they had two presentations? I mean, even if they did that it would be easier to just change the 4 in 499 to a 3. I don't think they did that--again, Sony's a huge company with some serious partners. You can't just make big decisions like that on the fly without causing some serious chaos.
Even if they did undercut Microsoft on purpose, EVERY business seeks to do that. Except maybe for Apple.
@Ginkgo
With no disrespect intended, I feel like you and many others are missing the point of this game and these new consoles.
Nowadays, everyone seems to feel like if it doesn't have sparkly, beyond-realistic graphics, it's not using enough processing power. Everyone also seems to feel like if you aren't shooting something, driving something, or shooting something AND driving something, it's not a game worth playing.
Knack uses quite a bit of processing power. Knack (the character) is made up of all these different polygons that are able to act independently based on what happens to them in the game. That's huge processing power, especially considering how big he gets. Bigger Knack = more polygons, each individual one able to move and act based upon what happens to it.
Is it going to be everyone's cup of tea? No, but neither is Watch_Dogs or Killzone: Shadow Fall, as pretty as they are. Either way, I think this is going to be a great game, and I look forward to playing it sometime during PS4's year one.
Could this ACTUALLY be an oasis in a mess of communites filled with ignorant fanboys? Could this actually be a community of mature gamers who can see beyond the logo on the box? ... Is the world ending?
Just in case it is, I registered.
Microsoft is not in control here in the US. Sony still is. A few gaming media sites like Gamespot published articles like "Xbox Passes PS4 in Preorder Sales," referring to sites like Amazon. Unfortunately, while the DRM change is a great swing for Microsoft, these articles often fail to mention that because the PS4 is split into 5 SKUs, all of which currently occupy the top ten list, PS4 is in fact still way ahead in sales.
Microsoft actually had some great ideas. To be honest, for the console industry to come out of its current funk, things may eventually have to go the way Microsoft intended with the DRM and extra fees. Still (as, I've noticed, has become quite typical of Microsoft), they executed those ideas rather poorly. I really want Sony to get the ball this gen. Everything they've done so far with PS4 shows that they've learned from their mistakes and are ready to take this struggling industry where it needs to go. Microsoft's blindness and arrogance has rubbed many the wrong way, and while I do still hope the Xbox succeeds, this time around it really does deserve the second place spot Microsoft has worked so hard to earn.

Yet another reason to dislike Microsoft. The list grows longer and longer.
