There's so many other reasons for a game to not make it to release vs bad gameplay, from a business side. Similarly, from a consumer side, a final product with great gameplay can still fall flat in other areas.
Tbh, I'd believe people saying it seemed amazing in testing; I had a lot of fun with the first game.
Don't think I'd have been into it as a long term service title.
I wonder if we'll ever get anything like MGS4's MGO again, that's my nostalgic online MP experience.

Eurgh. Buy studio. Make studio do something you deem to have the best cost/reward, against all other advice. Get hit with cost. Decide that makes it riskier for future. Save costs by laying off resources that were misused by the entity forcing the decision.
Gotta love capitalism sometimes...
