@nessisonett I will say that, ironically, a big part of the reason for the backlash is precisely that - that they did in fact pander. I don’t feel Neil Druckmann’s intentions were pure. It felt he wanted to virtue signal and pander, rather than tell a continuation of the story that we fell in love with in the first game. Story comes first, every time. You can’t value subverting expectations at the expense of story.

People can say, well, this is what happens in the world; deaths are abrupt and can happen out of nowhere. Fine, but don’t make the characters make illogical and out of character choices to get there.

The story was weak and the pacing felt off, with seemingly no idea where to place one scene after another, and the ending didn’t make any sense with what came before it. It felt half finished, and you can’t expect fans to be happy with that after paying money for it.
