POOLS is more of an experience than a game. You can technically see it through to completion in about an hour. But amid the brevity of our time with it, there's a palpable sense of atmosphere that'll leave you on edge.
POOLS is an off-kilter horror walking simulator where you must navigate complex mazes of tiled hallways, pools, and slides.
There are no enemies. There’s no time limit. There are no mechanics beyond walking or running around these hallways.
But the game taps into the niche liminal horror of the "Backrooms" concept, oscillating between tight dark corridors and abnormally large spaces, with bright water slides almost acting as jump scares.
There’s something incredibly unnerving about the game’s six levels, which expertly manage to scare the crap out of you without any form of traditional "scary" stuff. It's purely vibes, and they'll soak into your skin.
Visually, it's a real looker on the PS5 and PS5 Pro, emphasised by a brilliant use of lighting. The sound design, too, though minimal, can really raise the hairs on the back of your neck.
We scoffed at the game’s approach when we first booted it up, but within 20 minutes, we were twitching at the nearby sounds of sloshing water, and nervously approaching giant inflatable ducks as they bobbed around. There's no score here, so you almost start to think you're hearing things as you wade through the water.
It’s a creepy experience on PS5, but it’s taken to a new level on PSVR2. Mechanically, there isn’t much difference other than the ability to physically climb up ladders with the use of the Sense controllers.
However, Sony’s headset really lends itself to the scale of the game. We peered down seemingly endless pits, and twitched around to the sight of ladders being tucked into vents by unseen beings. And there's next to no visual disparity between PSVR2 and the flat screen version, making this one of the best visual showcases on Sony's headset.
Similar to some other PSVR2 titles, like Kayak VR: Mirage, POOLS is a thin gameplay experience, but you aren’t there for that. You’re there to be transported somewhere else. In Kayak VR, it's beautiful vistas. In POOLS, it’s creepy tiled hallways.
So while it’s a short-lived experience, it’s one we couldn’t help but admire. It certainly caters to a niche audience, but it quickly creates a unique and tense atmosphere that plays with your head, even more so when you have the PSVR2 strapped to it.

This looks pretty pool.
I'm really hoping we can get a true representation on PS5 of the Backrooms, some of the youtube videos look creepy as Hell. Without the critters the above doesn't really cut it.
Might dust off the PSVR2 for this.
I've tried this in vr on the beta branch on Steam a while back and it's super unsettling. I can't imagine how it would be on the oled panels the psvr2 has.
Is it very scary?
As someone who works in a waterpark, I’ve seen large spaces full of pools and slides without people many times, so it’d hardly be scary for me.
@Reeneman Hope so, since that seems to be it's only "game mechanic".
Only other time pools give me anxiety, is right before I dish out three bills buying the yearly chemicals for opening mine.
Made me feel sick so I quit after the first chapter. There is something wrong with the image but can't put my finger on it.
Is very creepy and unsettling though. Will give it that.
@Fluberuper I guess old men in tiny speedos would be far scarier?
@Perturbator
This, would a game I would not buy lol
I think what's most frightening is that a game like this has an 8 rating; among the entire catalog, without the glasses it's a mediocre game.
@Perturbator The old men in tiny speedos are terrible, but what’s even worse is when you have to walk through the locker rooms and the old men are just standing around bare naked in there.
@Fluberuper Now that's real horror...
Been interested in tbis one since it got announced and as someone with a massive backlog (over 270 games) I see the negatives of 'rather short' and 'one and done' as massive positives.
Will probably pick this game up first time it goes on sale
@Fritz167 If by 'without the glasses' you mean without the VR then I'm not sure what point you're trying to make?
Nearly every VR game would be a lot less enjoyable if it was flat screen. Job Simulator is a great VR title but would be beyond boring if it was flatscreen
@vermines Metro vr has spiders! Lots of them too. Cave crave is similar to pools AND it has spiders for horror mode if you enable to do so. Riches plank experience also has spiders and all 3 games will freak you out lol
@Fritz167 have you, by any chance, played any VR games, ever?
@Dogbreath If you're referring to the PSVR2 version, I heard there's an issue with foveated rendering. So you could try disabling eye tracking for this one.
@Vermines Nope Challenge might be the kind of VR experience you're looking for. Unfortunately, it's only on Quest at present, but hopefully it gets ported to PS VR2 at some point with more realistic graphics and the like. The beginning blurb says on the developer's website says:
"Face towering heights, crawling terrors, and robotic murder clowns as you test your courage in virtual or mixed reality. Hit the NOPE Button when it’s too much and retreat to the Breather Space with Mr. Peels and Coco before diving back in. Discover which fear makes your heart race the most in NOPE CHALLENGE!"

"POOLS is more of an experience than a game."
A problem lots of VR "games" suffer from, including the short playtime, with zero replay value. These kind of games should be available to play on PS+.
@Vermines I very recommend the recent release of Richies Plank Experience, which has an additional mode effect with spiders. And it’s a great thing to put other family and friends into, but be sure to clear a space for it heh
@Exerion76 Well good and fine to have
the options for various peoples, and a good portion of vr users like having these kind of smaller scale, indie/AA/A titles and experiences (which I and others I know also enjoy) - alongside larger scale/production games or not. But psvr2 has gotten a great selection of releases for various peoples just the last month or two, this year. And can also opt to play some traditional flat screen/monitor games as I do of certain games that come out and available too.
