Rematch is very close to being a real blinder. An online multiplayer football game in which every player controls an individual person on the pitch, it's a totally fresh take on the sport that takes more than a little inspiration from Rocket League, and the result is fantastic.
Playable in 3v3, 4v4, or 5v5 matches, Rematch plonks you onto an enclosed pitch and does away with fouls and most of the real sport's intricacies. By keeping the rules simple and matches short, there's a wide appeal here that'll draw in even the most passive football fan.
Having said that, this is a surprisingly technical game of footie that requires some practice to get the most from its moveset. It's just about easy enough to pick up and play, but there's a high skill ceiling for those willing to master Rematch's full spread of offensive and defensive manoeuvres.
Fortunately it includes tutorials and minigames designed to teach you the ropes and help you wrap your head around the somewhat fiddly controls. They're no replacement for proper matches, though, and we've observed enough selfish hero plays and goalkeepers refusing to stay in position to know it'll take a while for the real competitive potential to shine through.
Once you do have the basics down and are on a team that plays like one, it's incredibly good fun. Whether you're in goal, playing support, or bagging a winning goal, it's satisfying to coordinate with teammates and contribute to the effort.
The main thing holding it back at the time of writing is some fairly egregious technical trouble. We've noted some nasty moments of lag and other online-related hitches that prevent Rematch from being the smooth experience it needs to be. Presumably these will be ironed out in due course, and developer Sloclap is bringing crossplay support as a priority too.
Rematch is very close to being a brilliant online sports title, and we're confident it can reach its full potential with the right updates and post-launch support. The gameplay has depth, and successful team play is super rewarding. Once it gets past its early teething issues, this has real potential to take off.

And yet still better than Fifa.... sorry FC now.
How do keepers work? Is it a dedicated role, or can anyone in a game run into goal? Is it difficult to get people to play keeper?
I've often thought a football game where people could play proper positions in a full team could actually be interesting but as @ThomasHL points out it would require an actual organised group to do it properly.
I suppose that's why the smaller teams make more sense. When I used to play Rocket League with a few mates one of us would always play as 'goalie'.
Is there a single player mode?
No way does this deceiver 7/10 its rubbish. No fun at all and nothing like Rocket League.
@BearsEatBeets When I used to play with my nephew as a duos team, I always took goal cos he was the better finisher and I was the best defender.
Latency issues and other technical hiccups such as the cross play being disabled because it's borked. No fouls or other rules..hard pass from me and you still gave it a 7/10 when you've given games that are much better technically worse scores? PS really are not changing my point of view on your reviews credibility. This is constructive criticism just in case you know..decide its not.
@ThomasHL Whenever a goal is scored and kick off is taken, the game switches who is keeper. You don't have to stick to it though, and if you have all gone up the pitch, first player back in the area magically gains the gloves and can dive and pick up the ball. Sweeper keeper is one of the selling points and having played for three or so hours today, it works really well
This is very fifa street for any fans of that. I had no latency issues all afternoon playing today- twice the ball seemed to stick to the pitch for five seconds or so, but rather than being annoying this was hilarious as everyone stood around trying to 'free' the ball! I was getting into matches within 30 seconds, had two people being very greedy but other than that seemed like everyone is learning. I don't normally play online games but this has been a pleasant surprise and nice to get in early. If they iron out the minor issues this could be a favorite for a while
@ThomasHL goalies rotate for each goal scored. But if the goalie leaves the box, they tear off gloves and anyone can run in to take the role
I thought it was free then seen it at £20 i'll er pass.
@BearsEatBeets To be fair, that’s just Pro Clubs mode in FIFA. Problem is yes, finding actual people to play with, but it’s the most fun mode in the game if you have pals to play with.
@Nye1779 This definitely is not Fifa Street.
@Northern_munkey media literacy flag to Mr Spider Jerusalem.
@LikelySatan I don't follow sorry.
@Northern_munkey because it's subjective, ya crazy trans metropolitan.
Removed - unconstructive feedback
@Jrs1 I meant it bought back memories of playing fifa street for me. It does not have the levels of tricks, but that is a good thing otherwise no one would ever pass the ball!! From my few hours experience earlier, the best results came when the players trust each other and pass, can create some awesome goals. I understand it is not at the trick level of FIFA street, but I could see with playing time put in it could be great
But no 2-player???
@Nye1779 Ah i see, i was coming feom the point of view where in fifa street you can control every player 👍
@Nye1779 Your mention of FIFA Street brought back memories of NBA Street, man I loved the 2nd one on my Gamecube.
As for this it looks tempting but Rocket League was jam packed with toxicity lol. Does this have the chat and the pre selected phrases like RL? You know like "what a save!" 🤣
@Stale-Bread Loved NBA street!! Ahhh takes me back to a simpler time....😂
It has four selected phrases on the d-pad: Good job, we got this, thanks, and sorry!!! It's quite basic, but does the job and you can click R3 to call for a pass.
I turned the mic and speaker off at the start, and only had two instances of people disconnecting when we went 2-0 down, but it's an automatic loss at 4-0 so you don't get smashed by people playing early from premium edition!
I couldn't get into rocket league so can't comment on that, but so far just playing with randoms it seems fine, but im sure that could change quickly!
I would be happy to play with anyone from here as I imagine it's a lot better if you can play with the same people on a team and just chat to them.
I'm not in it to climb the ranks, just thought it looked like a bit of fun and certainly get a great feeling from setting up or scoring a quality goal
I played this game ALL DAY yesterday. Incredibly fun with a high skill ceiling. Personally I love playing goalie and have been taking that position in many matches.
Nightreign was slightly disappointing, FBC Firebreak was a real letdown, but Rematch is a winner!
Good game and reminds me so much of when RL launched on PS+, but this time it's on GP, dammit, been playing it over there. Minor latency issues but other than that nothing really. Hope they don't start adding tricks, that's the reason I don't Fifa. That rainbow (whatever) kick is already being abused, imagine if they add more. Personally I think it will be a RL contender, certainly a decent alternative at worst.
good game played it on gamepass its like indoor football bouncing ball of walls and rush goalie
Might check this out as a friend is praising it. I wonder why games like this don't implement some positive boost for completing passes or otherwise rewarding good team play?
This is a great idea executed poorly. People are just terrible in general so that’s why this game won’t work. Nobody’s gonna pass unless you have team mates who are not stupid. What a waste of time
ive been playing it not had the problem with people ball hogging. I think its alot of people in the comments with opinions on a game they havnt even played as per usual
@Quintumply I've been playing a fair bit and love the core gameplay. I really hope it continues to grow.
My main thoughts on it currently though are that it seems a little under-baked? There are so many little QoL things that I'd always thought were just a given in these sorts of games, e.g. a "Retry" button on the training challenges, or the ability to mute specific players in games rather than everyone or no one. Would you agree?
Only asking as I thought it'd be a notable Con
wish we could get a new sega soccer slam
I'd like to detract my opinion from this ain't going to do anything, to this could be my game of the year.
The trailers and build up did not do this any justice at all.
Its incredibly fun, addictive and doesnt matter if your playing with friends or randomers. Im having an absolute blast playing.
Basic rules, but complex and difficult to master.
The amount of times I've panicked and hit fifa shoot or pro who shoot buttons is every other game.
Seriously who would of thought putting in a fps style cross shooting system would be a game changer.
And who ever thought this small online only game would have the best goalkeeper controls I've ever played, I like actually enjoy being put in net.
Shame there are a few who think there naymar and run out of goal every time they get put in.
But small negative because everything else and many people brilliant.
10/10.
