R-Type Delta is a PS1 classic. One of the greatest shmups of its age, the title hasn’t received a port since 2009 on the PS3, so this has been a long time coming.
As the first R-Type with 3D graphics, we were worried the title might not look great with proper HD graphics. This era of 3D gaming tends to look pretty rough when viewed in hi-def.
However, we're impressed with the visuals. The touched-up environments are highly detailed, surprisingly destructible, and vibrant. The skyboxes are especially beautiful.
Even better, Delta is far more forgiving when it comes to collisions. Not having to be afraid of one pixel touching a building and destroying you makes the game a lot more enjoyable and allows for much more aggressive play. Collision woes are still present with enemies, but in context of gameplay, it’s acceptable.
The 3 playable ships in the game are very different from one another, giving you divergent options when it comes to weapon variety. This can be a bit of a double-edged sword, as certain upgrade paths will make some areas more difficult.
If your special can’t reach an enemy around a corner, it could mean repeated death, for example. While this doesn’t sound like a huge deal, the game doesn’t utilise a traditional chapter select, so repeated deaths can mean a botched run.
But this is a minor gripe when the weapons and special attacks are so fun to use. Activating a huge lightning storm miasma to obliterate a boss is incredibly gratifying.
While the game features new music that slots in seamlessly, the sound effects could have done with some more modernisation. When too much is happening, the weapons essentially sound like static.
Ultimately, this is a brilliant remaster of a great title, and if you’re a fan of shmups, this is a must.

How much are they listing this for?
Had my pal copy pre ordered for a few weeks now👍
Wonderful! I must add this to the schumup collection...
@GamerDad66 $24.99 / £17.99 !
I still have my original copy of this game and I love it. I downloaded the new version and the remaster seems spotless, at least up to the second level I managed to play. I would love if you could save and start from whatever stage you want but it is a minor complaint. I really recommend this game to shoot em up fans.
I love R-Type on PS1. I already wishlist this game and will buy it along with Earthion when the time is right (so many games, so little time & money >.<).
But despite a mini review, i notice the reviewer seems to have decent knowledge about shmup genre, which is better than the one who reviewed Neon Inferno 🤝
@belmont That was definitely one major quality of life improvement I was hoping for, but the game's excellent even without it!
My R-Type Delta: HD Boosted R-TYPER's EDITION should be arriving from Japan next week, must resist urge to buy digital. Suspect I will fail.
Late-night gaming after work is brutal. By the time I sit down, I’m exhausted—two rounds of anything is my limit, whether it’s a quick op in Helldivers 2 or a focused run in R-Type Delta: HD Boosted.
@meredith Do you use anything to stay alert? Coffee, energy drinks? I sometimes use nicotine pouches just my own choice, not a recommendation. If anyone’s curious, the ones I’ve used are listed here: https://www.pandasnus.com/collections/deals
But nicotine isn’t for everyone.
@lamb Yeah, it’s important not to suggest nicotine casually. Some people don’t use it, and it can be strong even in small amounts.
I get that. I do use nicotine, but only cigarettes—and I’m trying to cut back. Late-night gaming already drains enough energy without adding more habits to manage
If you ever consider switching from smoking, just start with the mildest options. Strong pouches can hit harder than expected—kind of like jumping into R-Type Delta on a boosted difficulty without warming up.
Makes sense. For now, I’ll just pace myself. Maybe unwind with something lighter before bed like a quick session of Plinko over on Stake then dive back into R-Type Delta when I’m actually awake enough to survive more than ten seconds.
Added to my wishlist. Never got to play this back in the day, keen to give it a try.
I hate the term "Glow-up". It makes it sound like some sort of teenage E4 nonsense.
Remaster.
