Update []:

Reports of Samson: A Tyndalston Story's developer shutting down were accurate, as the studio has now confirmed its closure.

Liquid Swords boss Christofer Sundberg posted on social media: "Liquid Swords is closing. Samson did far better on consoles, but it wasn’t enough to save the studio. I’m proud of our team and what we built."

It could be argued that Samson's fate was sealed when its initial PC version was panned by critics at launch. User reviews were very mixed as well, and so the idea was improve the open world title and then ship it on consoles to win back some faith.

The studio did manage to do that, at least to some extent, but it was clearly too late.

If you've had your eye on Samson, Sunberg offers some hope for the future: "We’re discussing continued support for Samson. We make mistakes, we learn, we rise, we move on."

Original Story: Just about a month after it was released on PS5, the developer behind Samson: A Tyndalston Story is reportedly bankrupt.

Liquid Swords launched the open world game for PC back in April of this year, but it didn't arrive on Sony's console until the 21st September. It's obviously starting to look like the title didn't do the necessary sales numbers.

At least in part, Samson's struggles will be down to its very mixed reception upon its initial release. Most review scores were lukewarm at best, and although the Swedish studio did issue a number of updates, the game never quite found its footing.

According to Swedish news outlet Breakit, Liquid Swords racked up "months" of unpaid wages, with the state having to step in and provide financial support. Apparently, the internal hope is that the company will be bought out.

It's a shame, because despite its clear flaws, there's something fairly compelling about Samson at its core. It's a grimy crime drama with grounded action, but it was left undone by technical problems and a repetitive structure.

What I'm trying to say is that Liquid Swords could have built something better off the back of Samson — but now, who knows what the future holds for the team.
