Samson Reviews PS5

Sandbox action game Samson first caught our eye back in January, with an announcement trailer that immediately had us sold on the Grand Theft Auto-style experience.

At the time, we said (in good fun) that Sony should "move mountains" to get Samson on PS5, having only been confirmed for PC.

Right now, it's still a PC exclusive, but just over a couple of weeks ago, developer Liquid Sword's founder, Christofer Sundberg (formerly of Just Cause's Avalanche), said that the title is "running on consoles", and that once Samson was out on PC, the team would "get cracking" on console ports.

But here's the thing: Samson's arrived on Steam, and it's immediately been met with some very disappointing reviews. Needless to say, our hype levels have been taken down a notch.

The game currently sits on a "generally unfavourable" Metacritic score of 48 based on 15 critic reviews. Most of these write-ups complain of severe jank, alongside an undercooked and repetitive melee combat system.

As you'd expect, many of the reviews compare Samson to Grand Theft Auto — again, an obvious inspiration — in rather damning fashion, stating that the much lower budget title overshoots in terms of ambition.

What's more, bugs appear to be a big problem; there's mention of broken missions that force a reset or a reload, and dodgy control schemes.

Still, there's some hope that Samson will improve over time, with the introduction of post-launch updates. To be fair, it does seem as though a lot of these issues could be smoothed out with a big patch or two.

As for user reviews, the game's "mixed" on Steam, with the above criticisms also being highlighted by players.

This isn't quite the gritty GTA-like that we envisioned upon gawking at that reveal trailer a few months ago, then, but if Samson does come to PS5, we're at least hoping that it'll arrive in a much improved state. It's worth keeping an eye on, we suppose.
