Update []:

Arc System Works has officially unveiled Phoenix Cyclops for Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls, its alternative take on legendary superhero Scott Summers, as first introduced in 2012’s Avengers vs. X-Men comic event.

The character will be available to download from 2nd November, and is built around long-range and close-quarters combat mechanics.

As producer Takeshi Yamanaka explains on the PS Blog:

“Empowered by the Phoenix Force, he can also unleash wide-area fire-based attacks that control large portions of the screen. In addition to projectiles, rushing attacks, throws, and setup tools, he has access to a wide variety of Optic Blast techniques.

As players continue to use Optic Blasts, they accumulate Phoenix Force energy called Solar Shards. Once four Solar Shards have been collected, Cyclops can transform into his Dark Phoenix form.”

While he will have a unique look inspired by his Phoenix form, two additional costumes will be available as DLC: Classic and Legacy.

This will enable you to attach a more familiar costume to the character, based on his classic comic book and animated TV show appearances.

Looking at the gameplay in the trailer, I think he looks like superb fun to play as.

But if you haven’t tried Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls just yet, a 3-hour Game Trial is now available for PS Plus Premium subscribers.

Original Story: It’s been a few months since the sublime Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls released, and while it’s had its issues on PC, I’ve personally loved playing it. (What a game!)

Earlier in the year, dev Arc System Works announced Phoenix Cyclops as the first of four Year 1 Pass combatants – and we’ll get a proper look at the newcomer in action, courtesy of a trailer set to release tomorrow, 7th October.

Phoenix Cyclops, as the name indicates, is an alternate version of character Scott Summers infused with the fire of Phoenix Force. The character first debuted in the 2012 Avengers vs. X-Men comic event.

While this game did sell well at launch on the PS5, it struggled to maintain momentum a little bit – and I think its poor PC port ultimately hurt its reputation.

Here’s hoping the introduction of Phoenix Cyclops – alongside some well-timed patches – can slowly help to revive the release’s fortunes, as it’s a great game at its core.
