Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter Patch Localisation

You'll never hear me say a bad word about Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter — it's a truly excellent remake and RPG in general — but it did ship with one undeniable issue.

Indeed, the game's English localisation was just a little bit off. Certain terms that were established in other Trails games were essentially reworked with more literal translations, leading to discrepancies in the script.

For example, mechanical enemies in titles like the recent Trails beyond the Horizon are called 'archaisms' — but in 1st Chapter, which was handled by a different overseas publisher and localisation team, they were named 'orbal golems'.

These unnecessary changes left some hardcore fans of the series rather disappointed, but with Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter now fast approaching its September release date, western publisher Gungho has actually gone back to 1st Chapter and delivered a surprise update.

Patch 1.07 is available to download on PS5. At just 164MB in size, the update makes a bunch of changes to the English script, adjusting names and terms so that they align with those used in other Trails games.

It's a big win for dedicated fans.

"Several major terms have been adjusted to align with terminology used in later titles in the series," reads the official blog post.

It continues: "Our overall goal with these updates was to align key in-game terminology and pronunciations with other titles in the Trails series. However, with the upcoming release of 2nd Chapter, we also felt it was important to preserve the experience of players who started the series with Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter as much as possible. With that goal in mind, terminology and character names exclusive to the Trails in the Sky games have been largely left unchanged."
