This PS5 RPG Will Expand 'Beyond the Game' with an Official Anime

The premise is reminiscent of something like Power Rangers or some of the late 90's cartoons - advertisements for products (toys, games, whatever) posing as shows. I'm always down for a good show (do we call it anime or is it donghua?), so maybe I'll be in for episode 1 and feel it out from there.

Always found it interesting how in the Western world we stick to naming it an anime or donghua, yet we would more normally say Japanese or Chinese cartoon many moons ago.

Like how my Japanese friend sometimes uses anime to describe all animation, as it’s technically just a shortening of animation.

Then sometimes my friend would use a phrase to describe the country of origin and then that it’s an anime.

Fascinating though how Westerners seem to get a lot more hung up on the naming of animation than many in said countries do for ours.

Ok I gotta ask, as someone who has been watching anime for a long time, like Ninja Scroll, Akira, and Fist of the North Star when they first released in US theaters long, what is donghua? I don’t think I’ve ever seen it in writing before, and don’t think I’ve heard it. Though I’m pronouncing it “dung how” in my head and it could be “do sway” for all I know. Thanks.

I honestly thought Wuthering Waves was Hoyoverse. Though I suppose all those gatcha games are made by Hoyoverse in my head until I read otherwise.😂

@rjejr Pronounced dong-WAH - it's Chinese animation, in the same way that anime is Japanese animation. It's kind of a silly distinction to be honest. If we just use "anime," everyone knows what we're talking about. I just brought it up to be cheeky.

@ButteredCrumpet @IntrepidWombat Ok my kid finally woke up and explained it to me. My wife didn’t know about it but she’s more into books than anyway.

@IntrepidWombat Thanks. I asked my kid if it literally was just the word “anime” in Chinese but he just looked at me and kinda shrugged. I’m old so I translate anime as “Saturday morning cartoons”. Whole world has been downhill since they got rid of Saturday morning cartoons.

@rjejr So, Donghua is sort of understood to refer to specifically not just Chinese cartoons, but ones that are heavily influenced by their culture too, one could argue we in the Western world use anime in exactly the same way.

But it can also refer to 2D and 3D. But yes, as @IntrepidWombat rightly says, it’s all just nonsense and a bit of a much of muchness using them all separately.

From the Asian’s I have known in both territories, none of them care for if we call it a cartoon, animation, anime and so on. Mainly just so long as we appreciate it!

Just so fascinating to see it all be used and changed about depending on the country. Much like IntrepidWombat states, I was sort of being cheeky myself, as I know of no one in those counties that will care.

And just to add, my dad used to say “You want your Japanese cartoons on now, Josh?”

So, in the Western world I think we all quietly moved to more Asian descriptors out of a wish to not potentially be mistaken for being racist etc. I mean my dad even used to call them Asian comics, but I guess now I wouldn’t go around telling people I’m into Asian comics instead of manga, as it sounds a little odd to some.

Even though many from said countries would say British cartoon, or Western Cartoon or American cartoon and so forth and think nothing of it.

I’ll stick with cartoons for American stuff and anime for Asian stuff. And if I don’t know what it is well there’s always the generic “foreign film”. 😁
