Publisher Playstack and developer Cold Symmetry have released the open beta test for Mortal Shell 2, the second outing in the morbid Soulslike action RPG series.
Check out the below trailer to get a taste of what you're in for:
The open beta, which is accessible to everyone, gives you a chance to check out the opening hours of the game. You'll be able to play the Prologue and an "early section" of the main game's open world.

"Along the way, you can cleanse beacons, explore optional dungeons, take on hidden mini-bosses and challenges, then press onward toward Magdelena, the Lady of the Woods," reads the official description.
While save progress made in the open beta does not fully carry over, those who make it beyond the Marrow Keep area will have the option to skip the Prologue in the final game.
Additionally, players of the beta will unlock a cosmetic reward, The Flayed Harbinger.
Mortal Shell 2, much like the original, is a Souls-inspired action RPG, with one key point of difference being the titular Shells.
Shells allow you to inhabit the bodies of other warriors, with each one granting you different abilities and strengths.
The sequel is looking pretty good, and given the open beta is free to play, you might as well take it for a spin. It seems like the beta will be running right up until near the game's launch on 20th August, so you've plenty of time to hop in.

Soulslike? Dang it. That just killed it for me.
@AhmadSumadi What did you expect the sequel to Mortal Shell to be? A cozy life sim?
Downloading to give this a go, didn't get on with the first one but I do love me a good soulslike.
Surprised there's no discs comments 🤣
I played the beta on pc and it's fantastic. The devs improved on everything from the first game in every way and I'm super hyped for the full game.
The only thing I remember about this game is gallons of blood pouring out from a skeleton.
Whaaaaaaat? Had not heard about this! Thanks for the heads up! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 Already have it preordered, but excited to give it a whirl! Looks like a VAST improvement over the first game… looks like we’ll find out today!
The game lords of the fallen 2 wishes it was
Hope it's good, blindly pre-ordered it 😄
@springer17 when I see games that look interesting to me, I generally don’t dig too deep because I wanna go in with just a fresh take. Hasn’t really failed me in the past. Didn’t realize this was that. 🤷🏾♂️
@GhostOfSparta82K well, there is one…
I remember being so into Dark Souls when the first one came out and my wife mentioned Mortal Shell. I kinda shoo’d it off as a wanna-be but I think it reviewed pretty well.
It’s been so long since Dark Souls and Elden Ring now that I think I may give this series a go. Sounds like 2, this one, is looking pretty solid based on the comments here! Probably time I dive in and check it out finally…
I absolutely adored the original and have been counting down the days for this.
I haven't gotten to actually start a play yet but man...that opening cut scene was beautiful 😭
I tried to get into the first one 3 times but just couldn't manage. It felt supremely slow and obtuse, even for a Souls-like, and it just put me off completely. Why Souls-like games feel the need to pepper their games with nonsense word salad titles for the simplest things and also actively make things harder to understand by not explaining nearly a thing is something I will never understand. I always love the core combat but bounce off so many of them because they're aggravatingly obtuse.
@MFTWrecks devs know that many people like soulslikes, but not sure why exactly, so they copy everything.
I wasn’t going to play this when I thought it was coming out on physical but now that I know it’s digital only I plan to buy it.
I thought the first was really clunky and slow, but I'll give this one a try. Any Mortal Shell veterans have a nuanced opinion about this beta?
Feels much smoother and more developed than part 1
@AhmadSumadi It's awesome, give it a try! Very gritty and visceral.
@Pat_trick The second game is way more refined and responsive compared to the first game. It feels a lot faster too. It's kinda like playing Dark Souls 1 then immediately jumping to like Dark Souls 3 or Bloodborne.
Big up to the devs for releasing a beta for people to get a feel for the changes, and the beta is actually pretty hefty with a tutorial area, a few bosses/minibosses and quite a few areas to explore.
@Deadlyblack Thanks for the info! Your description definitely made me more interested in the game!
Yeah, even just playing this for the last hour or so it feels so much nicer than the first game. I wasn't going to bother with this before, but now it's a must play.
After some three hours I'm stuck in a bugged trial room, well it's a beta eh? Game's pretty awesome though a huge step up from it's predecessor. Looking forward to the final version.
It’s not digital only , literally Amazon has it to preorder
Certainly one for @psmr to enjoy over the weekend!
Spent about 2 hours with the beta so far, and the game is just fantastic. Definitely some kinks to iron out, but yeah, it’s gonna be a winner ☑️
Loved the beta on pc. One of my.Most anticipated for the rest of the year by a long shot. Big improvement over the original and a well priced offering too 👍
@Yousef- I do have a physical copy pre-ordered as it goes 😉
This seems way better than the first one so far. It also looks great for a UE5 game.
Downloaded it yesterday definitely better than the first one I’m definitely preordering this
Been playing this over the weekend, and it feels like a solid entry into the genre. Definitely one to get eventually.
