Like a sprightly Peter Parker, the Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls beta is in full swing.
And I’ve been playing it every spare minute since dev Arc System Works switched on the servers.
As is routine for me in fighting games, I’m getting my ass absolutely handed to me by pretty much everyone online (curse you Magik players – I think she’s the first on the list to get nerfed) but I’m having a blast understanding the deeper mechanics.
I’m still not sure about the default control scheme: I really hate the way the “easy input” special moves are mapped, but I appreciate there needs to be a more accessible option for newer players, and you can still use traditional DP motions (and do more damage) so that’s fine.

While the Japanese studio has clearly tightened up the tag mechanic from previous betas, I’m not sure how I feel about assists and tags being mapped to two different buttons. More than any other fighting game, this can feel like a “pat your head and rub your belly”-style experience.
But it’s hard not to fall in love with the spectacle of it all: Arc System Works has absolutely nailed that anime-style look, and even when I’ve been getting pummelled, I’ve been beaming from ear-to-ear over what’s happening on screen.
I’m enjoying the single player Episodes mode too. While I appreciate this isn’t the package’s main appeal, the comic book presentation is way better than I expected, with My Hero Academia: Vigilante’s Betten Court providing the vibrant art for Spider-Man’s story.
Apparently, each of the five different narratives will have a different artist, so this should add some nice variety while playing through.

It’s not all sunshine and rainbows, though: I’ve had a mixed experience with the rollback netcode so far; most of my matches have been fine, but some have been a bit stuttery. This could use further optimisation.
Furthermore, I think the flow of some features could be improved – do we really need to see the title cards when hopping into Quick Training, for example? Probably not.
The good news is a lot of my criticisms should be easy to fix. Arc System Works seems to be engaged with the community and responding rapidly to feedback, so that all bodes well – I’d honestly expect further improvements at launch as early as next month.
The question is: will you be joining me in picking up the PS5 and PC fighter day one? Let me know how you’re getting on with the beta and what your current purchasing plans are below.

The last fighting game I had was streetfighter 2 on the SNES so it’s safe to say I’m not really into them.
However the new virtua fighter looks pretty cool so that might change soon!
@datamonkey Can't wait for the new Virtua Fighter!
Street Fighter is the only fighter that gets me playing fighters. This is a skip for me.
Not day 1 but down the line probably once majority of dlc has dropped
Hell yeah, it's a blast. Far more accessible than Guilty Gear, but there's so much depth if you're willing to dig into it.
I think i'll get it but not on day 1 since i'm not a tag-team fighters fans. But i've bought and enjoyed multiple ArcSys games and i have no doubt they will nailed the gameplay.
It looks cool but I don't care for tag fighters so I'll be passing. Hope it does well for those that are into that style of fighter though.
I put upwards of 70 hours into Strive and it was the game that got me to purchase a fight stick. So yea, this is on my list, but I’ll wait a little after launch. I’d like to get through some single player experiences first before I lose 50 hours to this.
Loved the Beta, the visuals, music and flashy attacks.
But I have fallen out with playing fighting games more hardcore, so this will be a Marvel Tokon Complete Edition purchase for me.
I get it but definitely not at launch. It will be much later on when either the amount of DLC fighters is big enough or when a definitive edition is released.
I may get a definitive edition down the line. The whole "playing fighting games" is more expensive than it should. Also, those anime inspired designs are off, I don't like them.
Nah I have no interest in it. Only fighting games I play are Tekken, Mortal Kombat & Soul Calibur.
Arcsys is my favourite fighting developer, but Marvel is eww.
Love Arc System Works, but really don’t care for Marvel, and my ambivalence towards Marvel may be strong enough to override my love for Arc, I guess, so it’s a skip for me.
But the visuals look neat as always from them and I suspect this’ll be a success.
Looking at the comments, I didn’t realize Marvel was divisive as they are.
No I'm going to pass. I did hop on the open beta a bit to play with a friend but it's just not my thing. I'm not a big Marvel fan outside of Spider-Man and X-men and I'm not a tag fighter fan. I also generally just don't vibe with Arc System Works gameplay for some reason.
I can see it's well-made though. For people that are into it I'm sure they'll love it. I'll just stick to SF6 and eventually VF6 and DOA7.
Man what a tough crowd. Hope it isn't reflected in sales because it's refreshing to see PlayStation finally have their own fighting game.
The 55% that went for not interested are cowards. If this is just another Sony boycott attempt, then maybe buy the game physically. But either way I'm very excited for the game, although my console won't install the beta because it says I don't have enough space, even though I have nearly 200 gigs free for it. So I'll just have to wait to get my hands on it at some point
It’s just more marvel slop so I’ll pass.
@Neuromancer Sounds like you're very into 3D playing fighters, so I would recommend checking out VF. Probably would be up your alley
@Fighting_Game_Loser I think it's more that an anime-Marvel arcsys fighting game doesn't have much appeal. Especially with the hardcore PlayStation crowd.
Sitting at a very firm 'maybe' right now personally XD
I've had a blast with the gameplay these past couple days (Ghost Rider and Ms Marvel being my primary character choices) but there are two major things preventing me from hopping on the full release right away: the €70 price tag and the necessity to have an active PS Plus membership to play online. Both of those aspects combined with the general questions regarding Tokon's longevity as a more casual-oriented fighter with deep ties to Sony (which is an especially bad mark to have if the PC version is any indicator) has me feeling a lot more hesitant on it than I would like to be right now 😓
Not really. Apart from Mortal Kombat, Injustice and Tekken, bo interest in others. I don’t like the art direction here too. Sales wise this won’t do well.
@Leinad7 What kind of art direction would you have preferred? I think it looks incredible.
Nope. No intention of ever playing it, even if they eventually make it f2p or release it on to ps+, just not interested in the genre.
Played the odd tekken and mortal kombat games in my childhood days of ps1/2 and mega drive but barely played a fighting game since. Did get into injustice 2, really enjoyed that and ended up getting the very long platinum for it but that was a one-off dip into the genre.
I trust this will be an excellent game that reviews very well but its player base will be tiny and it won't make money to satisfy Sony.
As a casual/single player fighting game fan who enjoys SF6 snd Guilty Gear Strive the beta convinced me this is a day 1 buy.
Oh yes definitely this game looks extremely good.word up son
Tbh fighting games are glorified memory games, with flashy graphics and my memory sucks so probably no, it does look very cool for those that like fighters though.
Just tried the beta and I was really impressed. But I hardly ever buy anything at launch, so I'll wait for a price cut.
I'll get it when it works on Linux. Maybe someday, hopefully sooner rather than later.
I usually check out fighters as long as there is single player content. This will be a good way to break in my FlexStrike fight stick whenever that shows up
I'm gonna wait for the trophies to leak before I make a decision. If it's trial heavy I'm gonna have to think about it. I like what I've played so far. Lots to wrap your head around. I've never been great at tag fighters but I love MvC2 so I will probably give this a go, trials and all if necessary.
It looks really good but its a fighter. I tried getting into the genre, even bought a fightstick. But i dont have the tenacity required to stick with it.
@RoomWithaMoose I mean if the hardcore PlayStation crowd isn't into anime then clearly no hardcore PlayStation fan is into Gravity Rush, Dark Cloud, or Ape Escape.
Unless a fighting game has a very strong single player mode like SF6's World Tour, I'm just not interested in them any more.
No Venom no party
When I'll see it on disc in shop, maybe I grab it...
YES! Was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed the beta. My fighting game time very rarely gets out of Tekken/Soul Calibur land but this one felt great to play. I'll get it eventually though certainly not a lauch
I'll get it sometime down the line, I just have too much that I want to play at the moment and upcoming releases.
@Rich33 The comic book stories definitely seem cool, but no where near as robust as something like World Tour.
I think they're going to be enjoyable though.
@djlard It's getting a disc release at launch.
Feels good to play; simple to jump into, with a nice variety between characters, while clearly having some depth to what you can pull off. I had a bit of lag, but nothing too awful.
Managed to win most matches, surprisingly, and caused a whole lot of rage-quitting! Haha 😉
Still, one to get later down the line, methinks, with a nice full(er) roster of characters on discount.
@get2sammyb
Its definitely going to be a game I'm going to be paying attention to your review on, and maybe buy on sale.
I used to be very much into fighting games, but in recent years, they need a strong single player mode to get my interest. (Whereas perfect balancing is not a major concern).
The SF6 World Tour mode with its character creator, and picking moves / attack style was right up my street (pun not intended).
I bought it at the end of Yr1 (the game+yr1 edition), enjoyed it, and bought Yr2 and Yr3 DLC's.
Have the UE pre-ordered. Have a ton of issues but i enjoyed it enough to keep my pre-ordered. Danger and Goblin were the highlights for me, really shocked at how well they played.
@RoomWithaMoose The FGC is going nuts for it i'm sure it will do well.
@Hylian-Likely I'm sure you can't wait for more Zelda slop later this year though 😉
@DennisReynolds I’m actually not. I’m worried about the remake.
The only fighting games I play are my copies of Tekken 1&2 for PS1. And my daughter kicks my ass!!! I don’t know why but she’s so damn good at it
@get2sammyb Ok... so it's maybe time to visit local store in a week or two after release and search thru pre-owned...
I feel like this will be another game that reviews a 9/10 but bombs at the box office because it’s just too good to play, lol.
@DennisReynolds Well, the FGC is different from casual audiences. I don't think the former being into a game is terribly indicative of prospective success.
Also, I've never seen anyone describe Zelda as Zelda slop. Very...bold statement, there. Especially in response to 'Marvel slop,' which is objectively much sloppier than Zelda has ever been (I say that as someone who thinks people are way to hard on contemporary Marvel).
@Fighting_Game_Loser Much to my chagrin, I've been told that exact thing many times.
@RoomWithaMoose Lol dw I don't inherently mean you wouldn't care about those games, but the "average hardcore" PlayStation fan isn't into anything but their cinematic adventure games kinda shows how far PS has kinda strayed in terms of their output of titles
Nah maybe in 5 years or so. But hopefully it sells well at launch and they do end up supporting for 10 years
@RoomWithaMoose I called it "Zelda Slop" because "slop" as a word has lost all meaning where its used for anything and everything regardless of quality hence why i said "Zelda slop" as a bit of mockery. To call everything and anything Marvel "slop" especially high quality stuff just makes me laugh and eye roll.
I agree the game won't appeal to casuals because well its too hardcore but i don't think that matters for sales. Fighting games don't need high numbers to be a big success. It says a lot that MK gets the biggest sales numbers yet get the least amount of support, turns out the casuals dip pretty quickly and can't keep a game going.
@DennisReynolds I agree about "slop." Personally, I like exclusively using it for AI. Associating it with low/no effort content with nary an iota of artistry just makes sense to me.
However, I do think it's easy to understand where someone's coming from by saying "more Marvel slop." Not the most elegant use of words, but it's easy to see someone being dead bored of the IP at this point. And even though Tokon is anything but low effort, it does have to deal with the association therein.
So I would still consider it a fair comment. Not especially eye roll-ey despite how obnoxious the use of 'slop' can be.
As for success, we'll see. I just don't think this game has a lot going for it besides being a solid-ass game. I do recall Sammy telling me many moons ago that he's certain this'll be a bigger success than PlayStation All-Stars was. And I'm still pretty doubtful of that. But I could be way off.
@RoomWithaMoose I think the game will be a success because its going to tap into the MvC market. Its clear Arc have taking a lot from MvC so combined with stellar animation and music plus a strong roster i think a lot will bite.
This game is gonna tap into the mainstream audience. The beta just felt right and vs say a game like invincible vs which is a game I love but this game is just fully AAA in the best way. I also love the approach of 2nd party live service game that PlayStation is taking with this. Have a unique experience and targeting a specific crowd of players.
Managed to play a few hours of room match with a friend, we're in day 1.
Loved Doom and Magik, my favorites so far, though I also liked Penny Parker and Black Panthère and I'm intrigued by Danger but could 't figure out how to correctly use her upward I-no style dash.
@get2sammyb
Art direction was the first thing thsold me on it.
Took me back to the first time I saw X-Men VS SF in arcade and, later MVC2
There is something with Japanese artists take on marvels heroes.
Not necessarily the redesign but the way they stand, move, the key poses... So dynamic and make the characters shine IMHO.
If you ever have the opportunity, I'd recommend exploring the Capcom versus collection museum/archives/gallery with all the marvel characters full artworks from Capcom artists. So great!
No! Not a fan of live service games!
I noodled about in the Beta for a while over the weekend. Would have liked to see more of the SP content, I’m not really into competitive MP. As that’s my main interest this will be on a heavy discount for me, if at all.
@Propaperpusher - You do realise you have several "Live Service" games listed as "Have" on your profile, right? You even gave Battlefield 6 (a "Live Service" game) a 9/10 rating.
played it via PC, it’s alright. my team was ghost rider/magik/wolverine/goblin because i’m an edgy boy
@Leinad7 @Hylian-Likely 😂
@Korgon “ I also generally just don't vibe with Arc System Works gameplay for some reason.”
because all their fighting games are made the same. at least that’s my reason. guilty gear strive is the crappiest fighter i’ve ever seen, even worse than netherrealms games . Capcom fighters actually all feel different.
@Propaperpusher I mean its a fighter and all fighters are "live service" games and are easily the type of game best suited to live service.
@get2sammyb I like the style of new Mortal Kombat or Injustice games more. Less cartoony.
I would have bought it if it was playable on Steam Deck/Machine.
If that situation changes I'll pick it up
tried it didnt like it
I'm on steam and that version was pretty wack, I didn't have the time to iron out the issues when my friend was visiting so later when I did manage to get it working (by lowering my resolution to 1080p) I only got to do a handful of rounds against the AI in standard versus. From what I got to play of it it seems okay, largely carried by the presenstation, I'm not a big super hero guy at all so the theming is kind of meh. I do like the Green Goblin, he's a funny guy.
I'm tired of marvel fighting games. I'd love to see a marvel vs DC fighting game though in this anime style.
This game was one of the most newb friendly fighting games Ihave played in years... So funny seeing people say how it is a hardcore game haha. The move sets are so simple, and combos can be just hit the same button 4 times in a row. I dont see this game doing very well honestly... Hopefully for Sony the Marvel license sells. Because after seeing how much they charged for SPider-Man from the Insomniac leak, it costs a ton to use Marvel licensed characters
I had fun but I’m totally just mashing all the buttons in futility.
They’ve slowed it down from the closed Beta version and to me it now lacks the speed it had prior which kept me locked in don’t get me wrong the game looks gorgeous and plays well but to me that’s a bit of a deal breaker because I really enjoyed the fast paced fighting
