If you're a big fan of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, there's no guarantee you'll feel the same way about the studio's next effort.
That's on purpose, too; Guillaume Broche, director of the celebrated RPG, says developer Sandfall Interactive isn't worrying about what the fans might want for its next game.
Speaking in a video on French YouTube channel Konbini, Broche isn't worried about the studio's sophomore game possibly being less popular than Expedition 33.

"We're just going to do what we love again," he says, explaining that the team isn't expanding in order to try and meet heightened expectations.
"So we're just going to stick to making games that we love," he says. "If people like them, great. If they don't, oh well."
Asked if he thinks Sandfall's next game might not reach the same popularity as Expedition 33, Broche, he shrugs. "I have no idea. I don't really care."
"It's weird to say, but we didn't make the first game to please anyone. And I think that's why it worked.
So for the next game, we'll make some drastic decisions too, and maybe people won't like it. That's life. Whether people follow us or not is their decision."
It's not known whether the studio's next game will be another Clair Obscur adventure, or something else entirely. Either way, its debut title was a huge success, and I suspect a lot of people will be willing to trust the team, whatever it decides to make next.

He may not care but if it does not sell they won't make money and in the end they are not there for fun i think.
Expedition 33 is an amazing game I loved playing it first turn based game I've played in a long long time.
Hopefully whatever they come up with next is good!
@Flaming_Kaiser translation makes it sound more arrogant than what he was actually saying
Risk big, win big
It's a healthy mindset to have when creating. The gaming industry would never, but if they adopted that way of thinking even to a much lesser degree, we'd have a lot less regurgitated garbage coming out and bombing hard.
Glad some developers still takes risks.
A wise game studio once said : "A game for everyone is a game for no one".
I think E33 is potentially the most overrated game of all time, but I respect a developer that wants to take risks and try new things and make art they want to make and I’ll be there day 1 for the next project knowing this because E33’s success will enable them the freedom to do what they want.
Nice. I'm glad there are at least some dev teams out there who are financially stable enough to gamble a little.
I think a bit is lost in translation here. Totally agree they should just make the game they want to make.
they're gonna ape the gameplay from FF16, aren't they?
Expedition 33 was amazing because it was allowed to do what it wanted. Let them cook. I like fresh ideas. If it turns out weird, so be it! Love creativity taking the reins!
I like his, "We do what we want " attitude.
Dragon Age Origins was also made because the devs wanted to make something they liked and that kicked off a franchise, albeit one that got worse. Though that is EA's fault.
I just hope what they like is also what I like (again).
Whatever it is, I just want something completely different from E33.
Good. E33 is a good game, but I don't want to see it become a franchise. As long as their next game is JRPG-like, I'll give it a go at launch. They've earned that.
Curious to see what they do after E33 and if it'll stray from the game's formula.
If they were just to retread the same ground it would quickly become boring. I look forward to what they create next, and if it's not my kind of thing, it'll be someone else's, and that's ok.
Looking forward to this team coming up with something new/different.
I don’t understand this line of thinking. It happens so often in media now. Just make what you think is meant to be made. Quit trying to convince people you don’t care about expectations by saying you don’t care about expectations. If you have a real level of confidence in what you do, then do it. Don’t try to soften it just in case by saying I warned you you might not like it. I just thinks it defeats the entire purpose.
I found E33 a tad overhyped and derivative but that is a healthy mindset! Go for it!
Hopefully it's something completely different so I end up liking it.
@Corc11
Indeed.
Besides, when you actually watch the video, body language gives a different vibe/tone too.
But yeah, "just translating" word for word doesn't work 100% here
Developers really should be making the games that they want, not necessarily those which everyone else wants to see. Whether I like the finished product or not, it's a healthier approach than trend chasing.
Lmfao watch it be a live service game.
I mean I love their attitude but let's be real about how this industry now works. If they have any investors in their next project, they are beholden to them above even their intentions.
@Frmknst The combat was by far my favourite part of Expedition 33, so I wouldn't mind if they kept it pretty much the same. However, rest of the gameplay (exploration, mostly) could use more variety.
That was the most French response to a question imaginable 🤣.
As long as it's fun to play, I'll play it
@Corc11 I hope so otherwise its a really stupid response but I can see what you are saying. Nobody can be this stupid to say it like this.
