My approach is purely pragmatic, and nearly two years ago, I proactively adapted to the expected trend and sold off my collection of physical games. I’ve since replenished it during sales on the PS Store. Now my game collection is entirely digital. If I end up buying (I’m not sure yet) God of War Laufey, it will definitely be the digital version. I’ll want to play my games on the next Sony console as well, and I really don’t want to deal with keeping a disc drive at home (if the PS6 even has one), especially since we know that at some point, new games will stop being released on discs. No petition will change that, even if 2 million players signed it instead of the currently laughable 200,000.

1) It doesn’t explicitly state if it’s fully on disc or a worthless few MB’s

2) If PS6 has no disc drive and we can’t bring forward our owned media this is more insulting than anything else

3) If the dialogue in the full release build is as bad as what was in Ragnarok and what was shown in the Laufey reveal, I don’t even want to own this

@Jocaju I disliked Ragnarok with the best of them, so much I put my disc on eBay the second I finished the game. Horrible dragging on and forcing me to play as Atreus. Just bad.

Laufey at least they are going for continued angle of 2018 (which was an incredible game). As well she actually looks fun to play. I'll keep any open mind and if same as Ragnarok I'll sell the disc asap. Probably one of the last few games I can ***** Sony.

Ragnarok was a big step back from 2018. They need to go all in on this. I do miss the savage nature of the OG trilogy and even 2018. Ragnarok went all orange and green fluids for a lot and seemed tamer overall. It was also super slow for 4-6 hours about 2/3 in imo. Still a great overall game comparatively but GoW is either crushing the 9th entry or pushing out an Ascension.

The data speaks for itself, digital sales outweigh physical now by quite a big margin.

The high street and the we sell everything store are all mostly non existent of a game shop or game aisle.

This isnt a corporate greed thing either, this is just the way the consumer has gone and now its the minority who buy on disc.

Games just cant fit on discs now properly, and we've seen many discs just be download access keys. This 2 isnt just greed as if it was they just wouldnt of bothered with the disc at all.

Ive been a buying digital ever since PC basically went all digital. Are games cheaper? Well yes and no. The triple A gzmes we all play on our consoles are all priced around the same on PC.

The cheaper games people talk about are the made for pc games, or lower budget games.

Unfortunately for you, playstation arent the ones forcing this hand, they are just the ones strong enough to admit, the consumer have spoken and physical games have become non profitable.

The data must show that the trend od digital is continuing and by 2028 the production of physical cost to consumer buying ratio must be so out its not worth it.

I am looking forward to this much more than I did Ragnarok. I liked the story and characterisation in the new games but I found the combat a bit boring at times.
I know people have gotten hyper focused on the protagonist and writing in Laufeys trailer but for me I got excited by what seems to be a more bombastic combat style and a really unique setting.
Hoping it lives up to my expectations and I'm sure there will continue to be naysayers but as that same crowd like to trot out 'a game for everyone is a game for no-one'.

Sony and its artificial stopping point of 2028 should get them all the vitriol that deserves for a company selling an$800 console with the disc drive sold separately. To me it’s not about going digital, I’ve assumed the PS6 would be all digital for years now, but you can’t give people the option of buying a physical or digital PS5 and then after they spend more for physical you tell them, sorry we’re not making discs for that drive anymore.

So, if Intergalactic slips into 2028, like big AAA video games have tended to do for like the last decade now, is Sony guaranteed to release it on disc? I do think they owe their paying customers that much. Not their Stan fans, they can die on whatever hill they want, but paying customers should get what they paid for.

So if Sony ever expects this backlash to go away, just announce all first party PS5 games will release on disc. And if not, they very well should expect a lawsuit.

I really just want to continue to borrow games from my library, and I can’t do that with digital. Though if Sony wants to give my library codes that expire in 2 weeks, like some demos expire, that I could live with.

So many things Sony could, and probably should, have done for their paying customers, besides telling them to suck it. 🤬

Pc is and has always been an open source piece of equipment, meaning you can have multiple store fronts, but the reality is majority are buying on steam, which is basically a closed system.

Think of nintendo. Microsoft and playstation as the storefronts, that will help.

Your not forced to buy playstation just like you ain't forced to get your games from steam.

You can always simplify it all by shouting bad mutli billion company.

The data shows the vast majority of players are now buying digital. By 2028 the number will of grown so much, its not cost effective to produce physical. That is just the reality we are in.

You can just look at the sales of physical by looking at the amount of game stores or game shelves within stores, its dying and thats not corporate greed that just consumer habit.

Edit; you talk about a closed market, but whether you buy a ps5 game on a disc or you buy it on digital, playstation still gets a percentage, its on their console.
You dont have competition either way, they sell the physical games at a set whole sale price, they sell it to different vendors.

They then sell it new at the exactly the same price pretty much.

The only time this changes is on sales or its an older game.

So reality is, there has never been compeition, playstation gets the percentage either way.

The only competition and issue is when it comes to the secondhand market and then thats already out of playstations control and playstation do not benefit from those sales and neither do the development teams who make them.

@Bez87 I don't buy all my digital PC games from Steam. I buy them from GOG, Epic, Steam, and too many small indie publishers to count. There are a lot of options, and they compete with eachother by having sales.

GoG is my main purchasing site. Used to be Steam and I do still use it, but GoG is king. No DRM, no launcher required, genuine ownership with offline installers, cheap.

That's the main difference between PC being all digital the last decade and consoles now reaching that point - choice. On console there is none.
One store front completely controlled by the platform holder with a take it or leave it policy.

That sucks and console gamers, I'm sorry to say, are soon to find out just how much.

@NishimaruX as a PC gamer, and wishing to ensure that the console gamers here don't get the wrong idea, I should point out that GOG does not have the majority of new AAA games. It's mostly used for older titles where YES, I agree it is good.

Obvious reason for not having the latest games is that PC gamers are thieving scum (speaking as a PC gamer and knowing them well) and as such selling games without DRM, launchers and online requirements is a business model that leads to rapid bankruptcy (speaking as an Amiga owner in the early 90's I saw how that went).

Most people reading this site want new mainstream AAA releases, and in that regards the stores that stock such titles are no different to PSN outside of a better refund policy.

Even that Steam refund policy is not a "positive" either. The entire reason it exists is because PC gaming is a bungling mess where it's 50/50 if your game will run like utter trash. Two PC's with identical specs can have totally different experiences so you can't even avoid it by doing research.

Meanwhile, any person that needs a refund on a console game is foolish and brought it on themselves. It's very easy to watch reviews, watch a Digital Foundry tech review and know exactly what experience you will have on your PS5 before you pay.

The main advantage of PC for AAA is the ability to buy grey keys from other territories where you can save £5 to £10 on the price, but then you lose the refundability so it's swings and roundabouts.

But the bottom line is that for the latest AAA titles, the PC effectively only has "one store front", because Steam, Battlenet, Ubisoft etc are essentially the same in all but name when it comes to core policy. No different to PSN.

If every console had other storefronts then it would be an open source product.

You go to a shop or you go online and you choose which system you want.

You either want a Nintendo store front, a microsoft store front or a playstation store front.

Even when you go into a brick and mortar store and your fighting yourself which store you want to go to and theb choose a playstation game, Sony are getting a cut of that game.

And now look at the landscape of physical games.

Nothing has actually stopped and yet apart from 1 place I know of properly. I couldn't give you a list of rivals for you to go fight over to get your disc copy. Because they dont really exist anymore and that is not down to corporate greed. Thats down to consumer habits.

@Bez87 sony already made the sale from the game if some one buys it or not once it hits the store. the store is the ones buying the game , then resells it to the consumer. its not like the stores get a copy of the game and sony gets a % of the sale.

Whether its a cut at purchase or its a cut at wholesalers.

What going digital does in theory, is cuts out the waste.

Think about it this way, a large amount of discs and boxes have to be produced.

They estimate 100 000
They print 100 000
They then tell the wholesalers the amount. The wholesalers then tell the companies and then they put the orders in.
The discs have already been printed without a single purchase.

Then the figures come in.
The entire lot only want 10 000.

They are then left with 90 000, which maybe they'll sell slowly trickle down. Maybe they wont.

Sony and the majority of the gaming industry have the data and the data shows right now digital is out selling physical by quite a big margin. Give it another 2 years and that will be even greater.

Meaning the risk of printing millions of copies and only selling 1000s isnt cost effective anymore.

Whether you want to tell a round about story or not. The outcome is the same.

Us the consumer have moved the industry into this situation and this is the outcome.

Its like the whole debate of saving the high street.

You cant save the high street without stopping online retailers and their crazy deals.

Example I bought a bike from one of the big names. I found it online. But at the time I only had cash. So I rushed to the store.

Online offered me free build, next day pick up, a helmet and 100 off.

Instore it was full price helmet, 100 more on the bike. 15 for building it and they couldnt get it done until 3 days later.

That was their own store but their online out did them.

There is no hope.
