The entire PlayStation fanbase is hoping for a big State of Play this week – and we’ve already explained why we think it’s important.
And I think between the earlier than usual announcement of the event and the partnership with theatres across the United States, it’s reasonable to expect a robust showing – even if the highlight is some really great Marvel’s Wolverine gameplay.
But fans are hoping that a countdown clock added to the official PlayStation website is further evidence of a big show ahead.

I investigated this assuming it was on the homepage, but it’s actually hidden on a dedicated State of Play page. Looking back using the Wayback Machine, this page has been around for a while, but I couldn’t find evidence of it having a countdown clock before.
However, I’m not really sure this means much other than that the State of Play was announced really early this time. Usually the platform holder only gives a few days notice, so there’s not really much need for a countdown clock.
I do wonder whether the early announcement had something to do with the Alamo Drafthouse partnership, as obviously Sony needed a few extra days to process tickets and prepare the menu, which has now leaked.
Either way, I was a little surprised by our poll last week, where just 36% of you think this will be the most viewed State of Play ever. Given the trajectory of these livestreams, I’m confident this is going to smash all previous records, but I guess we’ll need to wait until tomorrow to find out for certain.
I think State of Play has been getting better and better, and Sony understands much better what it’s doing with these livestreams now.
So while I don’t think any of the abovementioned things are necessarily evidence a big show is in store, I do believe it’ll be an enjoyable one.
