While the response to Fable’s latest gameplay demo has been largely positive due to its in-depth life sim aspects, the game has come under fire for its “simple” combat gameplay.
Fortunately, dev Playground has clarified that its latest video depicted ‘Story’ difficulty, the “gentlest way to wander through Albion”. There will, of course, be much more challenging options available if you want to test yourself.
Writing in response to a fan query on X (or Twitter), the studio said:
“We promise the guards haven’t all taken up tea drinking mid-shift. Our team were playing on ‘Story’ difficulty. This is the gentlest way to wander through Albion. Should you prefer a sterner welcome, other difficulty levels will ensure the guards remember their training and are less polite.”

None of this is particularly surprising, but I did see several people criticising the level of difficulty online, so it’s good to get official clarification from the team.
Personally, I think Fable is the kind of game I’d actually quite like to play on easy, because I’m here for the vibes and the social chaos first and foremost. I know not everyone will feel the same, so I think that’s the advantage of offering difficulty options.
What are your thoughts on this? Which difficulty level do you think you’ll select if you pick up this game? Let us know below.
