Destiny 2 Support Ending After 9 Years, Sony Dev Bungie to Focus on a 'New Beginning' 1

After almost a decade of support, Destiny 2 is done.

The game – first released in 2017 – has gone through a number of highs-and-lows, adding a ton of expansion packs and eventually becoming free-to-play.

It became a PS5 first-party game when Sony bought Bungie for $3.6 billion in 2022.

But now, it’s over. The legendary studio has announced that as of 9th June, it’ll stop active development on the game.

To be clear, the release will remain online and will be available for you to play for the foreseeable future. But there’ll be no further content updates or live service support.

Bungie says that its final update will focus on making Destiny 2 a “welcome place for players to return to” – and you can read a little more about its plans through here.

The Washington-based studio says it’ll now focus on a “new beginning” and “incubating our next games”. It’s unclear whether this will include Destiny 3, or something new entirely.

2024’s The Final Shape ostensibly wrapped up Destiny 2’s storyline, although the studio did continue supporting the game with last year’s Star Wars-themed Renegades.

But player numbers have plummeted and Bungie has since focused on Marathon, which also has struggled to attract a particularly large playerbase – despite positive reviews.

Sony bought Bungie to lead its push into live service, but it’s been forced to write off over $750 million of its value, as the dev’s wrestled with relevancy.

Whether it has enough runway from the Japanese giant to even incubate a new game remains to be seen, but if it does, then it’s going to have to be a hit. Godspeed to all involved.
