This PS5 Roguelike Turns Alice in Wonderland into a Gritty Poker Action Game 1

The spiritual successor to FuRyu’s CRYSTAR and CRYMACHINA will launch on 5th November for the PS5, with an Alice in Wonderland theme.

Lewis Carroll’s iconic novel will form the backdrop for CRYMELIGHT, a “dark bishoujou action” roguelike which will incorporate poker themes into its battle system.

Here’s the blurb, via Gematsu:

“Following the events of 2019’s CRYSTAR and 2023’s CRYMACHINA, CRYMELIGHT follows a young girl known only as ‘Alice’ after she wakes up with no memories of her past and discovers she must journey to the lowest layer of Purgatory to earn her ‘Rebirth’. Alice must set out from the Tea Party Hall, defeat enemies born from the depths of madness, and confess and confront the sins she has committed, undergoing immense emotional growth in the process.”

As alluded to above, the playing card imagery of the source material will comprise the backbone of the battle system here, as you’ll be working your way up to “stronger” hands to enhance your capabilities in combat.

The gameplay flow will split between Wonderland itself, a so-called “prison where the souls of the dead are held captive”, and the Tea Party, a “sanctuary offering respite to young girls burdened by their sins”.

What’s particularly interesting is that there’ll be two camera perspectives you can use: World Immersion Mode will minimise UI elements and keep the action close in a side-angle view, while Action Mode will pull the camera back in order to prioritise visibility and combat.

The game will cost $19.99/£15.99 for its standard digital release, although a $39.99/£32.99 Deluxe Edition will also be available, featuring various in-game items and a digital art book and soundtrack.

There’ll also be a physical release and Collector’s Edition in Japan, but there’s no word on that launching worldwide.

To celebrate the announcement, FuRyu has also reduced the price of CRYSTAR to $3.99/£3.19 on the PS Store, with the discount available now until 6th May.
