Iconic actor TC Carson has reprised his role as Kratos, after the God of War protagonist was recast for the Norse saga.
Long-time fans will recall Carson brought life to the anti-hero in the Greek games, before being replaced by Christopher Judge in the more sombre God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarok.
But starting with God of War: Sons of Sparta, the veteran is back in the hot seat, and speaking at a panel as part of MegaCon Orlando, he joked that Santa Monica Studio “came back after they realised they let me go prematurely”.

Taking things more seriously, he explained that a “great conversation” led to his return:
“Eric [Williams, God of War Ragnarok’s director] came out, we had dinner, we talked about it, and he told me what they wanted to do and I was down for it. I believe that when the universe puts work in front of us, when we obtain that work, we work through that work, and when the work is over, we go and find other work.”
Carson’s recasting as Kratos did make sense, because while he’s a very accomplished actor capable of more muted roles, Judge brought a totally different dynamic to the protagonist which fit the Norse saga.
It’s worth noting that both actors have spoken of their deep respect for each other, and it looks like they’re comfortable sharing the role of Kratos in his various timelines.
Carson’s big task now is to bring his energy to Santa Monica Studio’s remakes of the Greek trilogy, which were announced during a State of Play earlier this year. Development is still early, so it may be a while before we actually get to hear him in action again.
It’s expected that the next God of War game will star Faye as its protagonist, Kratos’ wife in the Norse era.
Sneakily recorded at a fan meet earlier in the year, Judge appeared to indicate we’ll learn more about the game this summer, although he’s since clarified those comments on social media, suggesting he was talking about a different project.
Either way, Faye’s game – directed by veteran Cory Barlog – is expected to release next year, so we may not have to wait too long to see it.
The future looks bright for God of War, then.
