In what is a rather sudden development, PS5 players are being sent notifications about age verification. At the time of writing, this is limited to players in the UK and Ireland.
The message says that in "compliance with global regulations", users will need to verify their age "later this year" if they want to continue using communication features, including text-based messaging and voice chat on the current-gen console.

The message also includes a QR code that you can scan with your phone (as pictured above), which provides a link to Sony's website. You can then verify your age through three options:
- Facial scan (take a photo of yourself and have the system give you an "age estimation")
- ID (use identification documentation like a driving license, passport, or ID cards to prove your age)
- Mobile number (use a verification code sent as a text message to your phone)

You can find an FAQ on the whole process by clicking through here, via a PlayStation support page.
This kind of age verification process falls in line with recently introduced age verification laws in the UK and Ireland. Age verification is now required to access all kinds of stuff online, much of which is deemed adult content.
However, concerns over data security remain prevalent, and so it'll be interesting to see how this news goes down with PS5 users.

UK trying to steal our data yet again.
I got that email. Yoti.com? Never heard of those yet. Also they already have my phone number on two steps authentication...Sony the hell you are doing. Account is as old as earth too.
Also:
Biometric data retention and consent issues:
In 2026 Spain’s data‑protection authority (AEPD) fined Yoti about €950,000 for storing facial‑scan images longer than it promised and failing to get valid consent for processing biometric data used in age verification. Authorities said Yoti was not properly implementing GDPR principles like “storage limitation” and “lawful basis.”
Coarse “privacy‑first” claims:
Critics argue that a company branding itself “privacy‑first” should not default‑opt users into processing their biometric data for internal research and development, which Spanish and German‑based analyses have flagged as misleading.
Extensive third‑party tracking:
A security‑focused investigation reported that Yoti’s app and website submit device‑level identifiers (Advertising ID, IP, hardware info, etc.) to third‑party trackers like Adjust and Google Firebase without clear, prior consent, potentially violating GDPR cookie‑consent requirements.
Edit. I'm fine without messages if they are dumb enough to valuate my account age. Thousands of ways to message friends if needed
I've managed to avoid these draconian age verification rules so far but the net appears to be tightening.
Grim.
Funny how quickly our governments went from 'companies are taking and misusing too much of your personal information, we're going to regulate them to keep you safe' to 'the internet is too dangerous, we need companies to have more of your personal information to keep you/everyone else safe.'
The acceleration from nanny state to full Orwell is concerning.
Just got the email but the address looked kind of weird. I figured I'd wait until I saw an article here before I did anything. Wasn't expecting one so fast.
They already have my phone number so I'll go with that and nothing else.
I don't think we have the social media age restrictions in Ireland yet. Sony getting ahead of it before it happens?
Update: "An error occurred during communication with the server." 🤷
If such regulations are implemented upon the basis of "Safety", then it must be scrutinized to the highest degree. Too often, "safety" is used to breach the line of ethics as it relates to an individuals privacy.
Is this a once-and-done verification, or do you have to scan that stupid QR code every time you start a party chat? Also, are there any extenuating provisions for those with Benjamin Button syndrome?
I hate all this age verification now some random company has your biometric data till they get hacked.
oh brother here we go again 💀
I play almost exclusively single-player games on PS5 myself (with the lone exception of Marvel Rivals) so this won't affect me a ton but it still sucks to see such overbearing oversight be implemented yet again when they still can't (and most likely never will) guarantee your data won't get compromised despite all their insistence to the contrary.
@Shepherd_Tallon Yeah first I've heard of it in Ireland too.
Stupid system, tried with my phone number but doesn't even work
I don't use messaging or voice chat on the platform, and I'd rather not hand Sony (or their third party partner I'd never heard of before) my biometric data. So I guess I won't have access to those features going forward.
The funny thing here is my PSN account is over 17 years itself, and has seen constant use in that time period. But somehow they can't work out if I'm old enough to use messages.
Musing - if I don't verify my age does that mean all voice chat is blocked online by default? That'd be a right boon if so.
Ok, stupid question alert: will this affect me buying an age restricted digital game going forward, or is this unaffected? Had both my PS and Xbox accounts since around 2011
Took a read-through of the provided FAQ and one section in particular caught my eye: it says that the act of 'joining parties or group sessions' would be disabled if you haven't verified your age with PlayStation yet. Does that mean you wouldn't be able to play with friends whatsoever until your age has been verified? 😭
Urgh FFS. I really don't want to have to do this to be honest.
@Swirly The FAQ outlines that access to the PS Store alongside purchasing games from it is still grand to do after these restrictions are rolled out.
Bad times here in the UK. Plus all this data is being handed over to Palantir. It says a lot when the guy who really kickstarted all of this - his daughter having killed herself after social media algorithms were feeding into her mental health struggles - is against how hardline the government has become. Also this was passed under the Tories too so it’s pretty much a stitch up by all parties.
@Fizza Cool, thanks. I haven't had a chance to read through all the gubbins yet
@DennisReynolds you think 'they' don't have it all anyway?!
People making a mountain out of a molehill with this, any excuse to be miserable and angry I guess.
@get2sammyb Amen to that. Doubly annoying as myself and @Shepherd_Tallon point out, we don't have these bollocks restrictions here in Ireland, yet are getting lumped in with the UK here.
I don't care for the actual features, but in a way this reminds me that all the time and money I've pumped into my PSN account can vanish in an instant.
I’ve only had my PSN account 19.5 years. And I was over 18 when that was made.
So I assume this will mean all the under 18’s will be banned from messages? Unless their parents do it for them. Though child accounts would still not work in theory.
@1970sGamer Sony Interactive Entertainment already have a copy of my passport? Do tell how this has happened...
@BobSpeed1 that's a good point and hasn't been made clear at all - will all under 18s now be banned from messaging/parties/group chat?
If not, then the whole thing is a pointless data grab
I saw the email, but hesitated when the link wanted me to log in. It's always worth being sceptical of random emails wanting your details. The ever increasing amount of age verification is a nuisance, and I don't fully trust those that are asking for it. Things do get hacked after all.
@Balaam_ It's one and done. While I don't like it, it's also little different than if I walked into a store and tried to buy cigarettes or alcohol, they either judge your age based on how old you look, or want to see ID.
I did the face scan and it took about 30 seconds to scan the QR code with my phone, log in, click a couple of buttons to take a picture. It's pretty painless imo and people making a bit of a mountain out of a molehill as they did when Xbox added it.
At the end of the day I think it's more important that kids are better protected, which is the aim here.
I'm a loner on the playstation side of things due to friends being on Xbox/Pc so I'll try to skip it as much as I can but hopefully they don't make it a requirement like it's in your face every other day.
I don't use either feature so they can sod off.
Bring this to Belgium and I'll kick my ps5 out of my house. Don't they have other problems over there?
I’ve refused to do it on Xbox, and it will be the same for PlayStation. Both gaming platforms have had my bank card details for years, so obviously I’m over any stupid age requirement. I very rarely play online anyway, and certainly don’t use chat 😂 And how does sending a verification code to your phone verify your age?!?
Account age should definitely be the default factor for determining a user’s age. If Apple made it work for their recent iOS 26.4 update there is no reason Sony can’t do the same.
It's a no from me. Not until PlayStation apologises for hiring Jim Ryan and firing Shu.
I got that when i tried as well@Shepherd_Tallon
While I'm all for protective measures to ensure younger players aren't using features they shouldn't be, isn't that really something that should be up to the parents? If you're old enough to be the controlling owner of a console, then most likely you're old enough to use all of the features. If someone younger has access, it's either on your account (so the restricted features wouldn't be blocked anyway) or it's on a child's account, where all of the communication features are blocked by default and need adult access to be worked around.
Case in point: my 9yo uses my PS5 and only ever plays what I have allowed her to play and is always under supervision, so people need to step up and parent so these kinds of verification measures are 100% unnecessary.
@get2sammyb then don't? Doubt that you really need playstation voice chat or messaging. Everyone uses external Comms anyways
How long until the database is hacked and everyone's private information is leaked?
Stuff like this makes me sick especially when it's the same old lie about 'protecting children'. If that is the goal how is Roblox not shut down?
The UK's online unsafety act strikes again.
Shudder the day this comes to the US
@Shepherd_Tallon
Same here today, just tried it, seems like they are lumping Ireland in with the UK...they are different countries Sony.... facepalm
I've been purchasing games rated for 18+ for years and now they ask if I'm over 18?
Oh no, I won't be able to use messaging or voice chat.
Absolutely disgusting. Disguised as “protecting children” when it’s just about giving billion dollar companies more power by hoarding data until they inevitably get hacked. Really hope this gets fought back against before it becomes commonplace in the world, because make no mistake about it this 100% will become reality if it isn’t repelled.
@Nightcrawler71 Probing the information they've provided, the phone verification does this...
What the actual hell. So they cross reference the data with your mobile provider... I'm not sure the mobile provider can furnish a third party with that sort of information.
"... you’ll need to verify your age later this year to continue using ... features, such as messages and voice chat. You will still be able to access ... games, trophies, and the Store, if you do not verify your age."
That will be a no then, until they (inevitably) add 18 etc. game purchases being blocked. No I won't be sending a random third party my ID or photo, so that it's one data breach away from being accessed.
Also not sure how the phone verification works, but I imagine it's only people on monthly contracts, ie. not people like me on a 'pay as you go' service. Otherwise it would be fairly easy for anyone to create essentially a burner phone number to verify.
If that works though, I guess that's exactly what I'd do, a burner phone for £10 to prove I'm an adult on my 18yr old PSN account. Something something, protect the children.
My PSN account is 19 years old and the first trophy earned is 18 years ago (Uncharted First Treasure) yet Sony needs to confirm that I am indeed an old b’stard.
Just when you thought you couldn’t despise this government enough.
If you got nothing to hide then you got nothing to worry about. Only people worrying are child molesters who play Fortnite trying to buy child nudes of kids for vbucks
@1970sGamer So you go into a supermarket to buy alcohol and they then say sorry you can't have it unless we take a picture of you and store it in are system. You would be ok with that?
