MLB The Show Creators Are Eyeing a New PS5 Rival 1

MLB The Show will finally have a real rival in the form of Konami’s PS5 console exclusive eBaseball: Pro Spirit 2026, which will launch worldwide for the first time on 16th July.

There’s been growing interest in this Japan-only baseball sim for some time now, with many content creators importing copies as San Diego Studio’s series has gotten stale.

This represents the first time it’ll be easily accessible globally, however, with English language menus and some commentary, provided by Josh Lewin.

Earlier this year, a free-to-play multiplayer version of the series launched globally, giving fans a taste of what to expect. But this new release represents the full experience, with all of its modes and features included for the competitive price of $59.99/£39.99.

Here’s what the blurb from the publisher says:

“Experience realistic baseball powered by the eBaseball Engine. Every movement and sound inside the stadium is brought to life with remarkable realism. From the flight of the ball and the players’ intense actions to the eruption of the crowd, every moment is recreated with impact.”

The game will feature a ton of single player modes, as well as competitive online gameplay.

The highlights for solo players include:

Season
Where you’ll make strategic decisions on and off the field to build a dynasty.
Star Player
An alternative to Road to the Show, where you’ll create your own baseball player in your preferred position and take them to the big leagues.
Hakkyu No Kiseki
A campaign mode where you’ll train and recruit high school students to build the ultimate collegiate powerhouse.

Obviously there’s no MLB license here so don’t expect to be playing as the New York Yankees or Los Angeles Dodgers, but all of the teams and players from Japan’s professional league NPB will be featured.

Annoyingly, it looks like the World Baseball Classic content is locked to the Asian release, presumably due to complicated licensing contracts. But this still looks like a strong package overall.

Already baseball content creators are indicating interest in this release. The Scann, an MLB The Show player on YouTube and Twitch, said “they cannot wait to make content on this game” and they’re not alone.

This is a net positive for fans of virtual baseball, of course. If Konami’s franchise can find a worldwide audience, then San Diego Studio is really going to have to step up its game.
