Here's one that's got to make you feel old: Final Fantasy X is celebrating its 25th anniversary this summer.
The beloved RPG, which first launched for the PS2 back in 2001, will be a quarter of a century old on the 19th July. And to help drum up some hype, Square Enix has opened a new website.
At the time of writing, said website's content is aimed squarely (pun not intended) at the Japanese market. It features info on fresh Final Fantasy X merchandise, including character plushies, an art book, and a frankly stunning vinyl set of the game's timeless soundtrack.
We'll update this article if and when Square Enix confirms this stuff for the west.
We assume that the publisher will have more anniversary-related announcements to make as we creep closer to the date, but we're not expecting any significant reveals.
Indeed, outside of a full remake, we're not really sure what more could be done with Final Fantasy X at this point. The game's fully playable — alongside its direct sequel — on modern consoles thanks to Final Fantasy X|X-2 HD Remaster, which released for the PS4 over a decade ago, in 2015.
How do you feel about Final Fantasy X after all this time? Listen to Tidus' story in the comments section below.

I don't like this. I absolutely adore the game, one of the last great FF's before 16 reclaimed much of the glory. But it is not 25 years old.
I don't remember clamouring for more screenshots in the latest gaming magazine, being blown away by every moment of it, having the single weirdest nightmare of my life about Blitzball.
Or if I do, it was last year, when it first came out.
Would love to see x-3 i remember the director saying they had an outline of what the story would be or a prequel would be good with auron jecht and brascka even though we know how it ends playing through that story and fleshing it out would be really cool.
My all time favourite game of all time. I have replayed it multiple times on all sorts of consoles and PC over the years and I still listen to the soundtrack often.
Game showed me that gaming is an artform. Love and adore it
Still the best looking PS2 game for me. When Square used to care aboit being at the pinnacle of graphics. I've never been able to pick between 7 and 10 as my favourite
@Yousef- this didn't even come to the death of FF, FF12 and 13 hold that crown by miles, this literally has everything you need for a good JRPG and sprinkle of western in there also, the cheesy story,.epic bosses, power grinding to see everything,.killing the dark Aeons is pretty much a game in itsself and the the combat arena, fun sides for ultimate weapons, od be very intrested to know what exactly marked the death
X is still one of my most favorite FF. Sadly, SE did a lazy job with the remaster but somehow they did a great job with XII remaster.
I personally don't want a remake or X-3 which sounds really bad if that audio drama from the remaster is the based story of X-3.
Square, please, just let X rest in peace. No more garbage sequel that tainted its legacy.
I consider X to be the last good FF game. 12 was good as a post game Monster Hunter game but the main game was kinda meh. 7 and 8 are still my favorites b/c nostalgia, but I recently watched my kid play 7, 8, 9, X, not in that order, more like 9, X, 7, 8 or something random like that, and really X was the only 1 that still held up. Sphere ball still sucks though. 😝
X-2 is one of the worst games I've ever played, still don't know what they were thinking, but I don't hold that against X or what came after, it was a spin-off game they kinda shoehorned into the mainline series.
Kilmari is still 1 of my favorites. One of the last non-human looking playable characters. Bunny girl Fran was basically just a girl with rabbit ears, but Kilmari was Kilmari. The all boy band in XV nearly killed me playing it. 😩 Vivi is still the best though, 9 is basically his game.
So yeah, X holds up, it's the height, the pinnacle, all lead up to there - Wakka still the best voice actor - and all downhill from there.
The 25 years doesn't phase me, I've been old for years, it's all downhill for me too for awhile now. 👨🦳
Been playing through the series this last few years, I get to X next year… can’t wait!
Loved it at the time, but I played X a few years ago and even with modifiers to speed it up I don't think it's aged very well compared to earlier entries.
Really disliked X-2 it was the first time I was truly disappointed with a Final Fantasy at the time.
X was and is a brilliant JRPG, one of my favorites in the series, though (unpopular opinion) I think I liked 15 and 16 more. Can you believe 15 will be 10 years old this year too, by the way?
Anyway, fantastic game, fantastic characters, I’m surprised the sphere grid system hasn’t had more influence on JRPGs too. The game is an incredible achievement.
It’s a good game but I struggle going back to it. It has some pretty boring sections.
Let's have FF7 Part 3 announcement already!
@Hyena_socks hahaha, i think it’s your alzheimer’s messing with you gramps 😂😛
Happy anniversary to my favorite game of all time!
@kyleforrester87 I can't play it on PlayStation any more. Its PC with the cutscene skipper and 4x speed or nothing.
And i say that as someone who is clearly a fan of the game given my picture. But those unskippable cutscenes and long ass grinding sections have had their day.
X is second only to IX for me. One of my favourite games and it gets better with age. One of the best soundtracks to a game too. Hated the trials though. Would love FF to return to the heights of its golden run
Still waiting on some kind of FFXIII trilogy remaster/remake. Would actually love to play it on my ps5 somehow.
They could add boosters too the ps4 version would be nice.
@nomither6 no, not yet, I'm not even middle aged! I've not even begun to peak!
This is a good excuse to go back to the game though, it was like the end of a JRPG era for me. I remember being pretty disappointed with a bunch of JRPG's that followed, when I'd devoured every one I found from the late 90s onwards.
It has its tropes, but in terms of overall story and the 'big bad' it's still pretty unique and compelling. Blitzball had no right being that involved and addictive (and frustrating) too.
I love X because every single slightly boring part feeds into the narrative. There’s no 5 hour detours or nonsense sidequests, basically all of the game happens on the pilgrimage path. It has focus that later games completely botched. It’s funny that XIII attempted the same thing but failed completely. I do love XII but you just sort of wander around for most of the game.
Favourite FF and deffo in top 3 games for me. The story still hits me after all this time.
Would love to get that vinyl soundtrack but it will probably cost an arm and a leg to import it.
I really like the art they have for the vinyl record, and the plushies are really cute.
I have a soft spot for FFX, I remember playing it as a kid and enjoying it a ton. Since the game is going to be 25 years old this summer, I should really give it a replay since I haven't touched it since the PS3 version released.
@LifeGirl I played recently on PS5 for the first time, and it was completely fine. Why the drama? Just to say PC is better?
I miss the glory days of FF before it got so western.
@PuppetMaster I cant believe that in the audio drama they actually went out of their way to ruin Tidus and Yuna romance. At that point what was even the point of bringing Tidus back?lol
@nessisonett I love X but…no nonsense sidequest? Dodge 200 thunders? Catch butterflies in Macalania? Play an entire league of Blitzball? The Zoolab? Collect the Al-Bed dictionaries? Chocobo field activities? Cactuar sanctuary? And there are more. I feel these diversions are what was really missing in XIII, Made by the same team.
One of the best, if not the best. The games that followed X-2 were nowhere near as good. XII was particularly bad
@Shrek_Realista Because if you've been playing the game for 25 years like I have, there are certain points in this game where it begins to become a chore to get through due to the amount of talking. Bevelle and Yunalesca spring very much to mind.
The Remaster not having the ability to skip cutscenes or speed up the game was a ridiculous decision.
@LifeGirl Would be great if they released a new version with those quality of life improvements.
For me it goes second on my top FF games, only being beaten by the goat that is FF7
Great game but the main character was super annoying lol
I prefer to play older JRPGs on my iPhone these days where the fixed camera gameplay is an advantage and I can just drop in for a quick blast.
Why FFX hasn’t yet had an iOS release yet I’ll never know. There isn’t any licences content and it’s already rereleased on Switch etc so it will run fine.
@Oram77 I would say VII is one of the greatest JRPGs of all time and a stone cold classic. But it’s nonsensical world building arguably makes it the worst FF on the PS1.
@RadioHedgeFund I mean FF7 literally change the way people thought about games, but yes it does get a bit wacky (FF9 does the same thing) I would say my top 5 FF games are:
1) 7
2) 10
3) 9
4) 6
5) 13.. yes, really
@Yousef- I fully agree with everything you just said!
It was top of the spiral down really wasnt it?
I do like FF7 remake / rebirth but I can understand the frustrations and dislike for them too. My first time play FF7 remake i came out disappointed when I saw the changes and where it was going. I think i'm just holding onto nostalgia at this point now.
As for WWE, they are calling it the ruthless depression era now hahaha!
@Nei More that the sidequests are baked into the environment rather than being a person telling you to collect 5 wolf skins with map markers and the like. They don’t take you out of the game, they’re along the main path mostly. But the dodging lightning strikes is rubbish 😂
@nessisonett I get what you mean. You know you secretly want Chadley in your FFX remake 😶🌫️🫥
@Nei Chadley still confuses me as a name. Did Squeenix thing that since Brad is short for Bradley then Chad must be short for Chadley..?
I played it on Vita many years ago and had a blast. It's one of my favorite FF's along with 4 and 7, and it takes the top spot in story.
FFX-3 confirmation incoming xD
I know a lot of people hate remakes but I think FFX & Square Enix would benefit from it here if they’re truly not doing FFIX (yes, there’s been leaks but nothing confirmed) nor FFVIII. FFVII Remake trilogy has been fantastic. But for FFX, we don’t need three games but one to two at max to flesh out FFX and make it up to date with TURN BASE combat still intact and sweet graphical enhancements would be great. Plus, who wouldn’t want to play a more polished version of blitzball?
Ultimately though, I think they’re going to just do a sequel/continuation to the FFVII trilogy once Part 3 ends. They have the world already created; it’s easy money to just make a sequel or spin-offs there. The characters, world, magic system and combat system are way too beloved for them not to just keep going IMO.
I would say it was very good at time and I classed it as one of the best. It had some great systems like the Sphere Grid and Blitzball was a great mini game. I also liked the change to the ATB with the battle queue swapping around based on actions.
That drops to nothing special however on further playthroughs for one major reason, the combat. Its the most glaring issue of that game that combat is comically easy as long as you just keep swapping out party members based on the enemy type. Everyone except Kimahri has a purpose in combat, and its annoying how much time is spent just rotating party members.
FFX is a masterpiece. The swansong of Nobuo Uematsu and Squaresoft before they became Square Enix and lost a lot of their identity.
FFX is still my favorite game of all time. Absolutely perfect
As I stand on the brink of 40, I am constantly bombarded with "can you believe X was XX years ago?!"-headlines, and FFX being 25 years old is the very first time I'm not shellshocked by it.
I love the game, but thinking back to the first moment I held the box in my hands, 25 years sounds wholly reasonable.
